Is it a bad idea to get a Strat with a 7.25 radius if I bend a lot? I heard they often choke out on heavy bends. I bend and overbend a lot.

It's a good deal on a Strat but I'm just concerned about this and sure I could just try it out and then not buy it, but It's a few hours drive to go get it so I'd rather be pretty sure before I drive out there instead of take the trip for nothing.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you want to set it to low action your going to fret out every time on a bend. The action on that radius neck has to be set a bit high to avoid it. If you don't mind 5 to 6/64th+ string height go and get it.

I play 7.25" radius necks exclusively and have no problems with notes choking or fretting out, even with three or four half-step bends above the twelfth fret. String height there is roughly 5/32", perhaps a skosh lower. I have an exceptional luthier who knows how to optimize these fretboards.

Agreed. 7 1/4" would require a higher action than I like.

I too play 7.25 radius Strats and I play Blues a lot of the time so, I bend very frequently and have zero problems with fretting out. I think if you use it and learn to set your guitar up to deal with it in a very short time, you will become accustomed to it and never turn back.

I have never had that issue on a 7.25 neck

My 62 RI Tele has the 7.25" radius, works just fine for me but I like a highish action and a lot of neck relief even on a flatter radius board.

I think the 7.25 neck is a ok comfortable feel neck but for bending I just don't like. I have little problem doing it but the string height just takes away from the great feel of chording you have with that radius.

Thanks for the tips guys. Well I didn't go for this one anyway and I'm gonna get a 9.5 which is basically the same as the existing strats I have.

I questioned the guy about this and he avoided answering until the last moment I forced it out of him he said you can bend like "1.5 half steps" as he put it, up to the 17th fret and then after it chokes. Which saved me the few hours trip just to find that out in person when I got there to try it out.

He then tried to explain to me why it didn't matter. But it does. I bend a lot and sometimes I want to bend "5 half steps"! Sounds like it was not gonna happen on that axe. And It's not like I need a strat for any other purpose than functionality right now because I already have 2 strats but I can't get to them because they are in a different country right now. I just need a strat to use right now for the time being for functional purposes. So it just seemed like a bad idea to me to go with this one.

And also, I know it is terrible but I know nothing about tech stuff and I didn't wanna spend all that money on something that needs work, either done by me or by someone else paid to do it. I kinda need it to be fully functional now for some projects going on. So practically I had to turn it down and go with another which I will pick up tomorrow!

Don't know what your budget is. I was going to suggest you have a look at the specs on the new American Vintage Hotrod 50's. Has a compound radius neck from 7.5>12 w/ a D profile. There's also the Eric Johnson guitar with a 12r.

Oh thanks for the tip but I just got an American Standard today already. The neck is a bit too fat for me since I have inhuman sized small hands. Strange because my other American Strats are fine, although they are 90s and this is 2000s, but it will do for now I guess since I can't access my others I needed a Strat to use for the time being.

I might sell this on though eventually. I mean there's nothing wrong with it. Just not the best size neck for my hands.

Next time you're shopping guitars, try a Clapton.

Re: Trying a Clapton, alright I will check those out one day!

Re: This strat, actually I spent some time to set it up and it plays much better now. In fact better than my previous strats. I shall have to set them up in the same way once I get them back!

I know nothing about tech side of gear, I always thought that was someone else job ha. But I just learned some setup basics and managed to do what I wished people would have done when I gave them my axes to set up in the past. Unfortunately they always did a lame job so I never got my strats playing how I wanted and without tuning issues. From now on I will though!

I have no problem bending on either of my vintage fret/7.25 radius necks… and the action on both is pretty low.
