Apparently this is a 90s Fender American Standard Stratocaster. I also verified the serial number over the phone with Fender and they confirmed that it is too, but they said they think it is sunburst according to their records. It clearly isn't as you can see. However, does it seem to be legitimate?

I figure the only explanation could be that it has been refinished. Which is fine, I like the finish and it looks well done, but I want to be sure apart from that, it is a stock American strat like the person selling it claims. He also didn't seem to know anything about the finish and thought it had always been like that. Any thoughts? Would appreciate feedback. Also, sorry don't know how to embed pics so I just posted the links.

It looks genuine to me apart from the fact that I guess it must have been refinished at some point, that or Fender is wrong, which I doubt. And also it was verified as what he says it was by the guys on the phone at Fender. Just want to be 100% sure because of the fact that the finish is different to what they said. It's also a good price and pretty unique. I want to go for it but just checking first.

Any feedback welcome and appreciated! THANKS!

That is certainly an unusual finish - it doesn't look like any factory Fender finish I've ever seen, so I'm thinking either the body was refinished to that from the original sunburst or perhaps it is a complete replacement body. It looks like the contours of an American Standard so I would be more inclined to say refin instead of replacement.

Thanks for your reply John C. I kind of want it because of the finish actually. On the other hand I want to make sure nothing is suspicious about it. Do you reckon it looks pretty much all original apart from the finish?

Yeah it must be a refinish I suppose, based on what you've said coupled with what Fender said, but I don't suppose that is necessarily a really bad thing is it? In this particular case.

It's hard to tell from just those photos - the neck and trem look right.

What is the year on it (per your correspondence with Fender)? That would help figure out if it should have a TBX tone control or the no-load tone control. It would also help figure out what the routing under the pickguard should be.

John C,

I couldn't get it anyway, the guy has messed me around too much and is impossible to communicate with! I'm gonna go for another strat, one which is more certain exactly what it is too. I really liked this finish though, It's a shame. But never mind!

Still.. Out of interest.. I forgot the year now. I think it was 96 or 97. I have 2 strats from 97 though and it seems pretty much the same apart from the finish so it kind of makes sense. I thought the no load tone pots were on deluxe models? Until like very recently? Not that I would know but that's just the impression I had.

The no load pots started on the American Standards whenever Fender started using what they called the "Delta Tone" wiring - which was the no-load tone pot for the middle and bridge pickups (the second tone pot) combined with a slightly overwound bridge pickup. There is some confusion as to when that started - as early as 1996 to as late as 1998. Fender's official spec sheets show 1998, but folks on this forum and other have earlier models with the no load pot. Prior to that American Standards used the TBX tone pot with the "detent" at about 5 (the TBX is still in use on production-line Clapton Strats and I think on team-built Custom Shop Clapton Strats, but not on Master Built Clapton Strats).

Oh right, so it is kind of vague then, because my American Standards from 1997 don't have no load tone pots. They are just very straightforward.

I don't know if it is just me but, The headstock/prghead shape does not look right. I see that it has the (correct?) truss rod insert but, The Bottom left of the peghead is shaped oddly.

Hmm well you know I just felt weird about the headstock but I didn't know why. There is one thing though.... It doesn't say original contour body at the very end of the headstock like it does on my other Strats. Does that mean anything? Or is it normal for it not to be present sometimes? Anyway I didn't get it and got another (the one mentioned in another thread) so....
