the 90's up to this years American standards or the same years in the Mexican strats? amd why do you think whichever one sounds better, thanks

i have a 2003 standard and a 1997 mexican strat, and im finding no different in them sound wise at all, the only different is i prefer the maple neck on the mexi better than the rosewood standard. maple glossy necks just feel easer to play for me.

the pickups seem to sound identical

I'd say American Standards for the subtle extras (rolled fret edges, 22 frets, etc). The pickups also sound better, IMO.

I have owned and tried both pickups, the American Standard plastic bobbin pickups are some of my favorite sounding strat pickups. The American Standard Stratocaster is probably one of the most perfect guitars ever designed.
The hardware electronics finish and quality is superior to Mexican made guitars. Sadly someday we might not get to compare as more and more models migrate south.
I do however prefer my maple fretboard over my rosewood as well.

I have always heard a big difference in tone between the MIM pickups and my 91 Strat. Big difference.

Yes Alnico 5 and Ceramic pickups sound totally different.

Donny, which one do you like better? Alnico 5 pickups or ceramic pickups?

Alnico 5 is what I use in every pickup I own,
except my Les Paul neck pickups which are 57 Classics with Alnico 2.

So I take it, then, that you like the Texas Specials more than the Lace Sensor pickups? I thought of picking up some Lace Sensors this weekend to compare both.

To tell the truth I never owned any Lace pickups.

Come to think of it my 76 I owned in the 80s had standard single coils.
So did my 89 American Standard.
I had a late 90s Floyd Rose model.
And the two I own now all have or did have Alnico 5 single coils.
If you go through Fender's pickups you will notice they only use Alnico 5 on their Custom Shop pickups I think.
