I was seconding what you stated to be true at the outset...that the phenomenon didn't occur when you stopped the action of the vibrato system using five springs.

To answer your question...'yes'. One of my 5 strats is an '89 Clapton in which the system is blocked, and another is '10 '57VHR set up the same way. A third, just acquired, is an '87 Clapton prototype whose bridge is decked, with 5 springs installed but there's no wood block between the vibrato's mass block and the guitar body. That's the way the old Blackie was set up. The trem claw in that guitar was flush against the body as well. All the guitars are strung with 10's and don't go out of tune when the strings are bent. Neither, for that matter, do my Gilmour, nor my Deluxe VG who trems are floating. :wink:

Yeah, maybe I just have to be extra diligent about all the friction points of the nut
