I have a '06 Deluxe Ash Strat and about six months ago the tone just seemed to disappear. Can pickups go bad like that? I have adjusted height, changed string types but it just doesn't sound like it use to. Am thinking about getting some '69 CSP to replace the SCN pickups. Somebody help please.

Have you ruled out any problem(s) with your amp?

How about your cables and any outboard effects?

Yes my other strats and teles sound fine. It's just like a tone knob has been turned 1/2 to 3/4 down but it is not and any overdrive is very muddy and very unmeshed.

I suspect the issue is with the adjustments you made.

If you counted the number of turns of the screws, or measured height beforehand, you can restore the original settings, which I bet solves your problem.

If not, a trip to the Luthier is most likely in your future.

cheers!

Try lowering your pickups, especially the neck pickup. The magnets used in the SCN's are extremely powerful and proper height is critical to optimum tone.

Does it do it in all switch positions? If so, look at the input jack connections. It's very rare for all the pickups to go bad at the same time, which would lead me to believe that anything that all three pickups have in common is where you should start.
Hope this helps.

It's possible one of the pickups is dead and needs a replacement.

Thanks for the help. I made adjustments after sound went south to try to better the sound. Gonna lower and work up from lowest set point and see what happens. Thanks I had read some where that these pickups have strong magnets. First noiseless I have owned so did know about changing them out for CS '69s. Just wanted some input from players, so thanks. I let ya'll know how it goes!

The CS 69's sound a bit "linear" to my ears -- audibly less spank and squawk than say, the CS 54's, the 57/62's, or the Texas Specials. Even the SCN's, when optimized with the correct height settings, sound "strattier" IMO.
