Yep, that does seem like the sensible thing to do...would still be keen get some opinions on the Pearly Gates Plus vs the twin headed Atomic humbuckers. I'm liking the idea of the versatility with the S1 switch on the 2013 version, but the Pearly Gates pickup gets some really positive comments and sounds awesome in the various Youtube vids. The Atomic sounds pretty cool in the video in the original post, but the Pearly Gates seems to have more of a strat tone to my ears.

Sounds great in bridge/mid position in this vid from 2.45 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0H0eQ0fm2U

I would be curious about the new V6 switch and the battery powered preamp. Is it useful or is it a tone sucker? If you dont want that , I bet you can still find the older version in stores as a NOS item for less.

I think the battery powered pre-amp and V6 switch are only on the Roadhouse Strat. The Lone Star instead features a splittable humbucker.

But it seems the whole point of these and many other special series MIMs is to deviate from the traditional Strat sound.

The V6 is a modified MDX circuit which has been tweaked to deliver 6 variable amounts of boost; its functionality is very similar to the Demeter midboost preset switch found on Tylers, Suhrs and other boutique super strats.

Hello forum members!

Ok, so I have the opportunity to buy either an 'as new' Lone Star 2010 MIM model, or a 'brand new' Lone Star new model for roughly the same price. Someone is bound to say that I should not get either MIM models, and get the US original instead, but that is NOT an option...I only have a limited amount I want to spend and I am more than happy with MIM quality.

So, to put it simply, which is better? What are the key differences? How does the SD Pearly Gates stack up against the new Atomic humbucker? I like to look of both, i.e. the black HB in the new model is not an issue for me.

Given the choice; which would you go for?

Tough call... the Pearly Gates Plus is a well-established tried and true Texas Blues Billy Gibbonsesque humbucker. The Atomic humbucker is just Fender's hi-gain bucker and I would not think it would be as well suited for Blues or Blues rock OMV. I sold my MIM Lone Star (the older version) when I bought my American Special but I do sometimes miss that Pearly Gates bucker!

On the other hand, I like the fact that the new Lone Star has 22 fret neck and has a nicer variety of colors available. Also, the new Lone Star can be had with either rosewood or maple fingerboard whereas the older was only available in rosewood. The Atomic bucker can be coil-tapped, whereas the older Lone Star is not coil-tapped unless you mod it... but that feature matters to some players and not at all to others.

Of course, I would not buy either the older or newer MIM Roadhouse or Lone Star when a barely-used American Special can be bought for the same price and comes in both SSS and HSS models!

Ok, just had a look around, and I definitely can't find a used American Special for anything like what I'll be paying for the MIM Lone Star...it's not entirely clear to me what I gain in the Am Spesh either; same materials, same pups, slightly superior finish perhaps (but that really isn't important to me) and greasbucket tone circuit vs. S1 switching if we're comparing current models which either could be done as a mod anyway. Am Spesh will cost me an extra £150-200, that's roughly a 3rd more than the MIM Lone Star...

I base the comparison on a candy-apple red American Special (same as mine) on local St. Louis, MO Craigslist with a negotiable asking price of $575 obo. Similar prices for used Am Spls at Guitar Center.

Both the MIM Roadhouse and Lonestar and the Am Spls have Texas Specials... but the Am Spls have pole-adjustment. Also Am Spl has the nice US rolled neck and superior fretwork. Gloss-urethane vs. the Polyester on the MIM.

If you in fact cannot get a Am Spl for comparable price in your neck of the woods then of course that is a big consideration. But as I said previously, I sold my MIM Lone Star when I got my Am Spl.. although I sometimes miss the Pearly Gates, on the whole the Am Spl is much more of a joy insofar as playability and feel.

The American Specials are such cool guitars for the money.
Really a good starting base for a great custom guitar too.

When I first saw Fender's new MIM Deluxe Lone Star and Road House Stratocasters, I began the speculate that the time of discontinuance of the American Special Strat was close at hand. The two guitars have quite a few things in common even if only on the surface. Well, adding further fuel for such speculation is this new pony:

The USA Professional Standard Stratocaster (there's also a Telecaster)

The thing is, though, I don't see anything about this new variant that would pull me away from buying an American Standard.

I would be surprized if they eliminate it. It replaced the HWY 1 I believe. It used to be a stripped down version of an MIA Standard , with the old style bridge and pickups . A flat paint job. It allows someone to buy a MIA strat for a little less than a MIA Standard . Some people want a MIA Strat with a 6 point trem and some of the other "older " appointments before the changes. When they switched to Texas Specials and a gloss finish it seem to muddy the waters, but it might be because it seems like every new strat that comes out has Texas Specials these days.

....I guess I should have read a little further. It's a 'dealer exclusive' model.

I am thinking heavily about selling my American Deluxe I installed the Floyd Rose on.
I spent money and spent money to get it right and I kind of don't like it now.
I got a guy that wants it and I seriously would rather have an American Standard or Special
I like the 3 tone sunburst and the big peghead.
Im a 70s freak
I would have to put the plastic and pickup to white.
Give it a vintage tone.
I don't know.
Its a huge step I owned that Strat 5 years now.
Anyway I would like it like this one my friend talked me out of.
Blade runner and locking tuners.

Well, here's a picture of the Professional Tele:

Image

This guitar sports a black CBS decal and an Enforcer humbucker in the bridge in the same fashion as a 1st generation Tele Plus - minus the 2-way toggle switch to cut one of the coils from the humbucker pickup. Coil tap and split can be achieved through a 5-way super switching system.
