I had a 2002 Texas Special Fat strat. It was a great guitar that I wish I never sold. I tried out the MIM Roadhouse and was hugely dissappointed. Not a step in the right direction IMO. Of all the guitars to bring back the "Hotrodded " series would be my first choice. The Surf pearl color was one of the coolest colors IMO.

Fender keeps trying to please. Some are hits and some are misses. Too often, the misses hang around too long.

I agree, the surf pearl color is HOT--it was my dream color on a guitar. I happened to stumble upon this very guitar (2002 Texas Special Fat Strat in Surf Pearl) a few weeks ago and I haven't put it down since :D

This Strat is such a gem. It's a shame that it isn't offered in these specs anymore (Texas Specials and Pearly Gates Plus). It puts the more recent American Deluxe HSS models to shame, really. However, it would have been nice to have locking tuners and/or LSR roller nut applied to the guitar.

Yeah they had some cool colors. I think that was the first sienna burst I ever saw. That series had the "modern staggered" texas specials . All the other ones I saw or had after were the "vintage staggered" with the louder G string.

In some ways, I think of the outgoing MIM Lone Star to be closer to the old US Lone Star vs. the current version. They were both basically hot-rod versions of the basic American/Mexican Strat model and had the same pickups. It would have been nice if the MIM had the same switching, but it would be relatively easy to replace the switch. The one nice thing about the new Lone Star is that it has 22-frets, but that may not be too important to you if you don't spend a lot of time playing high up on the neck.

Missing a universal route, 22nd fret and 2 point tremolo though.

I just received an email advertisement from Fender on the newest iteration of the Lone Star and Roadhouse. Interestingly, Fender's photo shows a Lone Star with a rosewood fretboard and a Roadhouse with a maple fretboard.

Isn't that bassackwards? The Andertons video in the OPs post says that the Lone Star is only available in rosewood and the Roadhouse is only available in maple like the last iteration.

Both the Lone Star and Roadhouse Strats are available with either a rosewood or maple fingerboard, depending on the finish. The video contains erroneous information in regards to this.

Reading back over this and your quote made me think of this picture lol.
Yeah Fender does excellent stuff but we only seem to remember the flops.

Hello forum members!

Ok, so I have the opportunity to buy either an 'as new' Lone Star 2010 MIM model, or a 'brand new' Lone Star new model for roughly the same price. Someone is bound to say that I should not get either MIM models, and get the US original instead, but that is NOT an option...I only have a limited amount I want to spend and I am more than happy with MIM quality.

So, to put it simply, which is better? What are the key differences? How does the SD Pearly Gates stack up against the new Atomic humbucker? I like to look of both, i.e. the black HB in the new model is not an issue for me.

Given the choice; which would you go for?

Between the two , would go for the new one. Honestly for just a tad bit more , you can locate a used USA version. I actually saw one today at a guitar store , so they are out there. Most will come with some better hardware , a better feeling neck and more than likely a case.

The cheapest MIA Lone Star I've seen sold for £200 more then I would pay for a MIM, and most are around double!!! So, that's why American is not an option for me...
