I just bought a lightly used 2002 Gibson Les Paul Studio with a one piece back and a AAA flametop in wine red. They're not as thick as the standards, and the maple caps are thinner as well. The 490/498's that come with it are a little bit muddy for my strat accustomed ears, but all in all, it lies firmly in the LP tonal family.

Although I wanted the full beefy fat sound of an LP, my favorite tone lies within the Strat world. Both are good, but I just have a preference. There is something about single coils that make me gravitate towards them, probably its the clear transparent clean tone.

The one thing that I miss on the Strat that I have on the Lester, is the shorter scale length and the easy bending as well as the dynamic sensitivity during fast runs.
Here re some pics

Sure you can, but if I had to carry an 8 lb guitar like this studio, I think I'd like to have the body mass work with better quality humbuckers (pots and caps) for a full beefed up tone, wouldn't you say ?

Strats are definetly much easier to carry and play sitting. This Studio is really body heavy, its weight relieved not chambered !
Cheers

My approach is different on a strat as opposed to a les paul. Different touch , different tones. I would play the lester until you get accustomed to it. Its a shorter scale , flatter radius guitar with totally different sounds. Spend some time with it and get to learn all you can about it . Gibsons are great instruments , as are strats, but they are totally different.

I totally agree

This Lester however is a bit muddy, I might have to change the pots to 500K for that ! But sure, it takes time until you get to know your instrument.

These are mine.
Ok I got some tips for you, maybe you will maybe you wont.
First off bust those covers off those humbuckers the difference in response and tone will blow you away.
To clean up wax residue use a hair dryer and paper towel it liquefies so quick under heat.
Then I recommend 50s wiring and orange drop .022 715 caps.

This is most commonly done Les Paul Mod and its even used by Slash.
Next get some air between those pickups and the strings. about 3/8 inch, let them breath.
This will give you a yummy tone to compare to your Strat and let you hear the real Les Paul sound.

Wow Thanks Donny ... I already gave the pups some breathing Space but I guess the wiring and the caps would help more.

I think I've found the caps here in Europe

I cant stress enough you need to remove those covers.
I did and the difference is a good pickup and the best humbuckers you ever heard.

No use the 300k that's there they are what you want.
The whole 500k volume pot sounds better is a misconception.
That's why Gibson uses 300k volume and Fender uses 250k, it sounds better.

Thanks for the clarification. I will buy them orange caps now, if they're the ones you are talking about, and install them ASAP.

Nothing wrong with the 490r pickup . Especially if you roll off the tone to about 4. I had one that was uncovered and it was a nice sounding pickup. I think you are on the right track with the wiring mod though. The modern tone circuit rolls the treble off with the volume, whereas the 50s will not.

Yep those are them.
The extra leftover wire from caps is what you use for ground on tone pot.
Its a super simple mod and the difference is a cream dream man.
Every sound you ever heard on a classic LP will be within your grasp.
The players on the Gibson Forums walked me through this too.
Its the most commonly shared mod on Les Pauls.
