I just put a loaded pick-guard of D.Allen 54/59 pickups (no affiliation) in my 2008 Am Dlx. I've had a DiMarzio Area set (58n/67m/61b) before that.

Although the DiMarzio were definitely much nicer than the SCN's that came with the guitar, the D.Allen seemed a bit more "awake". Both were however in the same league, and the Area pups are definitely decent pickups.

I still have trouble finding my sweet spot with the D Allen's, it usually takes some time for it to sink in (I hear some higher mid range that I'd like to level with the higher frequencies a bit more), but the one thing that I can say about these D.Allen's is that they are quiet, really quiet for non-stacked pups, they were as noiseless as the DiMarzio's.

I would have liked to try the Klein 57's Epic pups, many have good things to say about them, they're abit pricey though.
Cheers

James Tyler makes great-sounding boutique Strat pickups.

Why not order a calibrated set?

JTS3250 - NECK:
A fatter, warmer pickup than the 2250's, with more low mids and a lower treble peak. A rounder, chunkier sound with punchier mids. A little more attack, a little more spank and a little more power. Alnico 3 magnets have a different midrange characteristic than the 2’s or 5’s.

JTS5250 - MIDDLE:
That familiar sound of the Alnico 5 magnets with more attack, more chime and more power. Full, balanced and responsive with good low end and upper mid sparkle. Nice vibrant 3D qualities. Reverse wound, reverse polarity for hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4.

JTS2250 - BRIDGE:
Bright, airy and springy without harshness. Great cleans with good sparkle yet smooth. A very articulate pickup with good dynamics and a few hundred extra turns of wire. Clear tight low end. The Alnico 2 magnets bring a little less midrange and midrange push.

Rock on!

If you're opting for a hot humbucker in the bridge position:

CALIFORNIA SPECIAL - BRIDGE:
Chunky and punchy with great low mids. Big with balanced upper midrange. The tone of this pickup was compared to the voice of James Earl Jones. Strong attack with good sustain.

STINGRAY - MIDDLE:
Big, full and very dynamic with punchy mids and balanced highs that exhibit a good jangle. Rich in harmonics, these pickups are authoritive, yet touch sensitive. They have more output, but clean up well. Played hard they are fat - yet they brighten up with a light touch. Reverse wound, reverse polarity for hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4.

JTS3500 - NECK:
Same pickup as the 3250's, but wound for an HSS application using a 500K volume pot.
