Looking for any info on this '85 MIJ Strat such as specific model/series (contemporary 27-4400?) details and color name (sage green metallic?), approx value, popularity, etc. Thanks.

EDIT: found one here http://www.ebay.com/itm/130960789525?orig_cvip=true

Color is stated as pewter? Any comments on differences between E series and A series?

I think you've found about everything on this one - it is one of the 1985-86 Contemporary series (sounds like you got the right model number for the single humbucker version).

Also there is not really an "E Series" or "A Series"; that's just become Internet slang to approximately date an MIJ Fender (much like "Smith Strat" is slang for a 1982 "Standard Stratocaster"). Fender actually used either "E" or "A" serial numbers at that point in time, there was overlap with the serial numbers across the different product series they had those years ("E" numbers were used 1984-1987, "A" numbers were used 1985-86). Also "E" numbers turned up on other models like those "no country of origin" models with the Kahler Spyder trems (that appear to be MIJ) in the late 1980s.

On to this specific guitar - the color should be pewter. Pewter could age/yellow to a somewhat greenish color. That looks like what is going on with this one. The value is going to be somewhat dependent on the condition of the hardware/parts (but it looks like this one has all the fine turners and string locks). Value is going to in that $400-$500 range.

Thanks for the info. So Pewter is the only similar color made at that time? Hard to believe that it has greened up so much.

I think so - it doesn't look incredibly greened out on my laptop's screen. That being said I've seen quite a few silverburst Les Pauls that got fairly greenish, and of course that also happened with the Antigua finish. If it was played out a lot they can pick up that yellowing/greening from smoky clubs, etc.

Those single-humbucker Contemporaries are very rare birds, never saw their existence before.

chromeface - they may have been more popular here in the USA. I remember that my local Fender deal in Louisville in 1985 kept this 1-pickup Strat model, the HSS Strat with the System 1 trem, and the HH Tele with the System 1 trem in constant stock. While I never saw a pewter on they always had either a black, a red or a white one in stock during that time period with the bulk of Fenders were the MIJ Contemporary models (call it May 1985-end 1986).
