Hey guys,

Looking at a guitar on Ebay just now and its suppose to be a gold series from the early 80's

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=231075543066&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

Got to admit leaning toward it not being genuine seeing as it has ' Made in USA ' stamped on the neck and one or two other little niggles. But seeing as I have only ever seen a GO once before and I can't seem to dig up any info I can't be 100% sure.

So just really wondered what you guys thought?

No, it's not a Gold Series from the 1980s; they all had the gold finish.

I think this is one of those late 1980s "export only" models that normally have an "IO" serial number instead of a "GO" serial number. They really appear to be something in-between an MIJ Standard and a Squier that for some reason were stamped "Made in USA" in the neck heel.

Check out this thread on the "I" series Strats - this appears to be identical except for the serial number prefix:

Oddball Strat; worth approximately what a mid-80s MIJ Standard is worth ($400-ish). These might be worth less because it's too hard to prove what they are.

That has the pickguard screw pattern of an older Squier.

The pictures are bad, but it seems like something was removed around the area that "Made in USA" is stamped. And there is no skunk stripe on the back of the neck.

IMO, it is being passed off as something it's not.

First thing I spotted was the lack of stripe and what was the strange mark near the "made in USA".

The photos are really bad - but I think that strange mark is supposed to be a clear "Made in USA" decal over the finish.

I think that someone has taken a "G" serial MIJ Strat (probably the lowest end model) and tried to make it look like one of the "I" series that we have discussed in the thread I linked to in my earlier post. Hell - who knows what those "I" series guitars were - they look like a typical "I" serial number MIJ low-end Strat with that "Made in USA" stamped in the wood.

On MIJs the "G" numbers were used 1987-88 and the "I" numbers from 1989-1990.

What we can all say unequivocally is that this is not a USA Gold Series Strat - they didn't even use the "G" serial numbers anyway; the "G" serial numbers were used on "The Strat" - and this clearly is a low-end MIJ Strat, not a "The Strat".

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"There's a sucker born every minute" is a phrase often credited to P. T. Barnum (1810–1891), an American showman. Though this phrase is often credited to Barnum, it was more likely spoken by a man by the name of David Hannum, who was criticizing both Barnum and his customers.
