Somebody is making a very generous deal, but I'm wondering if it's too good to be true. Is this american special legitimate? It's second hand and the current owner says the previous told him it was 2009 but he's not sure. Looks like its 2007 to me... Is this a fake?

Haha, I just replied to you on stray-talk

On there I said, "I could be wrong, but isn't a Z7XXXXX serial number supposed to indicate 2007 as the year of production?"

It seems to be authentic: large headstock and text/placement of serial number and made in USA appear to be correct. If he would at least show the neck plate then we can further assess the guitar.

That's a terrific point that I overlooked. Probably best to stay away from this since he's advertising it as an American Special when the neck says otherwise...

Alright thanks. I'll ask for significant proof and see if he can come up with it, and if he doesn't i'll tell him the deals off

I'll respond here instead of Strat-Talk - yep, it's at least a Highway 1 neck. You can't really see the body well enough in the photos. Hopefully you will get to see it in person - if the body has that matte finish then it is probably a legit 2007 Highway 1 Strat. A lot of people don't pay attention to the models and only look up what the current version is called and use that model name instead.

Case in point - how many times do you see a 2000-2007 American Series Strat or Tele called an "American Standard"?

It looks just like a Highway 1 I had it had the 3 tone sunburst like that.

It is hard to keep straight. I guess my 2005 is a Series, but I think of it as a Standard. Were there any substantial differences? Besides marketing.

Yes, there were some real difference between the original American Standards that went out in mid-2000 and the American Series:

1. Rolled fingerboard edges on the necks
2. Staggered height tuners and single string tree
3. Staggered polepiece alnico pickups
4. The 1990s American Standard bodies had gotten kind of blocky; the American Series returned to the more rounded edge contours

The rest of it was more or less marketing - they still had the no-load pickup and slightly overwound bridge pickup, same tremolo, etc.

Fender went back to the American Standard name in 2008 and changed the neck shape a bit, changed the pickups again, and mostly changed the trem to a larger block and bent saddles.

One of the sound companies I work for has an American series in its back line hire pool and if you sit it next to a current American standard the differences can be readily seen.

You can say the exact same thing about Fender American Precision Basses. The were "American Series" from 2000 to 2007.

True - the entire series lineup changed name from "American Standard" to "American Series" at that time, then changed back to "American Standard" in 2008. I shouldn't be so guitar-centric - of course the Precision Bass and Jazz Bass models had the same name change as the guitar models.
