If this is your guitar
The current American Standard pickups are the Fat 50s.
There is your answer, hope this resolves any confusion.

The Texas Specials are some really nice pickups I think too, I have installed several sets.
Since I started on a 70s Strat Im fond of the American Special myself. :)

alright- maybe y'all can help here.

a year ago I put fender scn pickups in my '09 mim strat. they have been okay. when I tried out the above mentioned guitar with the texas special pickups I was amazed at the sound. my current strat sounded lame compared to it.

since I don't really want to buy another guitar right now, I am wondering if I could just get a set of texas spcls. for my guitar and expect the same sound. I don't know if there are any other differences in electronics other than the pups, or if I even would be just wasting my time.

thanks for all your great advice. means a lot to me!

This is an FSR American Special. It has standard pickups. One way you can tell is that if you adjust the bridge tone control, the notch 'clicks' into 10 because it has the Delta Tone Circuit. I have one of these strats too and I love it.

Looks like this, right?

Yeah... I owned one for almost three months and am the guy that finally got GC to change its advertising after several communications with their corporate guys.

The FSR Hand-Stained Honeyburst American Special sold at GC for $100 less than a regular American Special. It has American Standard Strat pups as opposed to Custom Shop Texas Specials and a "no-load" tone pot as opposed to a "Greasebucket" tone pot.

There was some confusion with Rob Schwarz's comments as it led some owners, including myself, to believe that the FSR had the same pups as an American Standard Strat... ie. Custom Shop Fat 50s. But that wasn't what Rob meant... the FSR has American Standard Strat pups.

I would imagine the FSR was given the overstock American Standard pups when the American Standard Strat switched to Custom Shop Fat 50s in October of 2012; which is about when the FSR Hand-stained Honeyburst Strat first appeared as a GC exclusive.

GC got their advertising screwed up, but the UK and European retailers that had rights to the FSR were advertising it as having American Standards all along.

My understanding is GC quietly switched the advertising and specs on their website and allowed owners to return/trade outside of the normal money-back guarantee time limit if they came in and complained.

Many owners love them and don't care about the mis-advertisement. At $799 for a new USA Strat they were a helluva deal!

Donny did get sick and tired of my posts though!

No man I didn't get sick and tired lol I just thought you should do what you wanted to and exchange it.
I was like do it already clock is ticking.
That makes sense as he never called them by name, Fat 50s.
So the Last of the American made plastic bobbin pickups reside in those FSRs
To me that is a treasure then.
I know the plastic bobbin single coil pickup and the humbucker are now virtually completely out sourced to Mexico.
Sad.
I have a set of USA plastic bobbin high output single coils in each of my Strats. I also own 2 made in USA high output Hot Rod humbuckers.
I have a Mexican Atomic to compare it to, good but not near as awesome.

Those plastic bobbin pickups were the American standard since the late 80s

Yep, the FSRs might have the last of the old American Standard pups... and some may have been put in MIM Strats too. Who knows?

I saw one on clearance in GC Fairview Heights IL and there is a used one on the GC website for $500. Again, $799 is a good price for a USA Strat but $500 is even better!

Stop in shop this morning and looked at American Special and it had Texas specials in it which are the same ones used in the Stevie Ray guitar. Neck and bridge had greasebucket tone circuit. 70's neck with urethan finish. Price was 9 bills and they were Surf Green and Candy Red.

The ones at GC must be a factory special run not American Specials.

I got mine the first weekend it came out when it was only $670. It was the best steal of all time.

The "standard" American Special single-coil Strats come in Candy Apple Red, Surf Green or Two-tone Burst and do indeed have the Greasebucket Tone Circuit and the Custom Shop Texas Specials and run $899 at GC.

GC in the US also has supposedly exclusive rights to sell the FSR Hand-Stained Honeyburst American Special which has the different pups and tone circuit mentioned in previous posts. Since they changed the erroneous advertising and specs online and in all their print ads and hang tags and now spec the guitar with the proper pups and tone circuit; they are now calling it the USA Hand-Rubbed Nitro Honey Satin Finish Strat or something like that and they have disassociated it with the American Special line probably to avoid further confusion on the specs. It runs $799 but it can be found at clearance price in some GC stores I believe and used ones are now popping up everywhere.

GC also used to carry a FSR American Special Strat with an ash body in clear gloss-urethane finish for $999. It was also advertised as Texas Specials and Greasebucket. I can't find it on their website anymore. It was gorgeous!

Glad they fixed the ad, apparently it is nothing like a American Special since it has different pickups, circuitry and neck.

I got my new Surf Green American Special during Fenders Spring Break Sale for 699 Canadian. Best deal I ever got on a guitar.
