so I am at guitar center in southfield, mi. killing some time. I pick up a strat listed as "am. std. special strat hand rubbed honey maple neck" plugged it in and was blown away. it was a used one btw. it felt great, and sounded so much better than my mexi strat.
the Stratocaster decal was the larger one. sorry I don't have more info.

does anybody know what pickups are in this guitar? if I bought them and installed them in my mexi strat, would that give me the same tone? I know body woods probably make a difference, so that may be an issue too.

of course, I could take the easy way out and just buy the dang guitar.

decisions, decisions, decisions....

It sounds like an "American Special" (the American Standard is a different series). These come with Texas Special single-coils which are not the same as American Standard pickups.

While the current American Standard Strat uses Custom Shop Fat 50's, all previous models came equipped with slightly varying versions of what were called "American Standard pickups". These were basically modern versions of the basic Stratocaster pickups utilizing Alnico magnets and plastic bobbins.

just called the store back. was told it was a limited edition, and only a year or 2 old. the pups are texas special.

as stated earlier, the headstock has the larger strat decal on it. don't know much about this to determine an exact year, but I may take a drive up there tonight.

here we go again....it never ends1 the gas that is

and a follow up. a friend has an anniversary mim strat (50th maybe?) it just sings, an I believe it has the texas specials in it. if I could just get a set of pups and put them in my current mim, it could save me a lot of money 8)

Yeah they argued that on here for days and Rob finally came in from staff said they were Fat 50s.
So you liked them? I have yet to hear them, my shop is only a Fender parts dealer.
I would like to get out there to GC and hear them, try them out.
I have done A LOT of Texas Special installs they are great pickups to work with.
Not once have I had any problems with them, always quality and perfect.
Other than that mostly I have only done Fender Humbuckers.
There are a few Fender pickups I have wished someone would want installed.
The Hot Noiseless and the Fat 50s.
I did try out the SCN in the American Deluxe and I didn't like them much.
I personally have only owned American Standard plastic bobbin Tex Mex or Hot Alnico 3s.
Most times people are having Duncans or DImarzios installed or the 57 Classics 50s wired with PIOs in Les Pauls.
Anyway its cool to hear positive feedback on them.
I have been poking around Zzounds site looking at American Standards.

just looked in the fall issue of the ams catalogue. on page15 they show an American special for 899, with texas special pups.

maybe the hand rubbed came with different pickups. the guy at guitar center said they were texas specials and not fat 50's, so i'm still not sure what to believe.

Yes that's what the guy was mad about he bought it thinking they were Texas Specials.
He returned it after a 3 or 4 page thread complaining about it lol.
But Rob finally jumped on and said it was a misprint on GC side.
It in fact has FAT 50s and that was part of the exclusive.
The guy could tell they weren't Texas Specials and was unhappy about it.

I checked youtube, and called guitar center again.... they are texas specials.

I am now debating buying the strat, or maybe just getting a set of texas specials and installing them in my strat. would it give me that same tone, or are there other electronic changes I would need to make. it would make it more economical to change the pups, but if any other mods need to be done, i'm not sure I want to mess with it

You should PM Rob Schwarz
Also here is the thread where he jumps in and figures out that even the data base is wrong on
these guitars, they have the new American Standard Fat 50s.
If this is in fact your guitar in question
Go to page two but read the whole thread.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me if the FSR American Special that I have has American Standard pickups? From what I've read on UK sites this seems to be the case. Here's a link to one of them - http://www.guitarvillage.co.uk/productdetail.aspx?va=1&pid=13100&c=98

Thanks again for your help.

Moe

Hi Moe,
Well looks like there's a bit of conflicting info..my info yesterday was as above...which would be Texas Specials.....I'll dig a little deeper and see what i can find.
More soon!
Cheers,
rob

Ok...checked with the Marketing folks. Yes TWO (count 'em) Two spec changes- 1) the finish is a hand stained satin lacquer; 2) the pickups are Am Std Strat pickups.

Sorry for the confusion.

Cheers,
rob

I went to my Guitar Center and the manager there is my friend so we looked up the data on it.
Guitar Center has them listed as Texas Specials but they are not.
They are the new American Standard Fat 50s.

But if you like them that shouldn't matter, get the guitar.

It sounds like you need to measure them (looking under the hood might not tell you anything even if they let you look). The Texas Specials have a bit higher dc resistance.

Thats a good idea orville :) you can always take your meter and touch the positive and negative of a cord plugged in and the volume turned up.
I did you a favor and stopped in while I was out will upload tag pic in min :)
