Hi all,

On my recent Strat, I noticed some discoloration on the body, specifically on the cutaways for the right arm and gut. I had a repair guy look at it and he said it was the paint fading. I'm not quite sure this is the case since there is no difference in topical texture with the surrounding areas. Perhaps it's just dirt? It seems to be underneath the polyurethane surface. I'm stumped, does anyone know exactly what this is?

Is this an original Strat or some kind of copy from Japan or Mexico?

The wear pattern does seem to indicate the phenomenon is related to contact with sweat and/or epidermal oils.

Bingo. It's normal and builds character.

Yeah, I figured this was the case. I don't know how I feel though; on one hand I have a guitar that exhibits character, on the other it's almost an undesirable blemish on a beautiful color/finish.

Maybe I should then bathe with the guitar, get rid of some of that build-up :)

Green or blue shades tend to darken over time depending on the shade and especially if it has a clear topcoat that has yellowed.

I have a Strat finished in Carribean Mist that has had the clear coat yellow slightly, turning it a little pale. Because the colour has a blue hue to it, it has gone into a murky green.
