Hey folks,

Alright so I've decided I'm going to be building my own strat using official Fender parts to make my dream guitar.

I've also decided that I absolutely want my guitar to have a body with a real nitro finish for a two reasons...
-I prefer the tonal qualities over poly finishes
-I love the concept of my strat aging and getting worn along with me :P

Now to my understanding the "Thin-Skinned" nitro finish strats have absolutely no other types of finish on them. Other "nitro finish" strat bodies will have a poly base and then the layers of nitro but the thin-skinned are nothing but nitro. This is exactly what i'm looking for.

My question is which Fender strat models have the official "thin skinned" nitro finish on the body? I know the Vintage Hot Rod series does but other then that I'm unsure.

Thanks for any and all help!

Cheers

I think the thin-skins you refer to are a special dealer specific item. I also think that they may have a non nitro undercoat. Check Wildwood guitars out. I know they have them.

Alright well i've been able to confirm that both the Vintage Hot Rod's and Wildwood's American Vintage line both have pure nitro finishes. (no poly)

I've also heard a couple people mention that the Highway One series also has a "nitro only" body. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Thanks the help Chris.

The Eric Johnson signature is thin skinned nitro. Very nice, resonant, 2-piece body that just breathes when you lay into it.

I want to clarify why the vintage reissue strats are nitro-cellulose finish but have a poly undercoat. While the thin skinned finishes are only nitro with no undercoat.
what is benefit of the poly undercoat on the reissues?
does it not wear as fast? and would it have the same sonic properties as an all nitro finish
thanks

I think how thick the finish is has more impact then what the finish is. Of course plugged into a 50 watt amplifer on 11 does it reallu matter?

Thanks for the comments. I am still trying to decide which way to go for a new strat if I were to buy one. I would really like to have a 57 reissue. I also like the 57 Hot Rod which is a thin skin.
I really don't need another strat..I have three USA models. I just want a 57...LOL..I really like maple necks and the vintage tuners and the light weight of the 57's
I guess i want a nitro finish because it will be different that my other strats.
Hot Rod is $200 more that reissue..is it worth it? ya know..thin skin and all.
I would be happy with either I guess.
