If you're going for the SRV tone then Texas Specials or Seymour Duncan Texas Hot Antiquity Customs would be the way to go, but if you're thinking Hendrix I would go with the Fender Custom Shop '69's. Although, I just picked up a reverse headstock 60's Strat and the "60's Style" pickups in it sound great. I think they might just be Tex Mex or something similar. Just goes to show, you shouldn't underestimate Mexican Fenders! :)

I touched on this in another thread. When it comes to Jimi, there's a great deal going into that mix. If you start out with the guitar, the upside-down RH with the strings going in reverse is only the beginning, but important.

I would have thought Texas Specials give you a Hendrix sound as seen through the prism of Stevie Ray Vaughan, if you know what I mean.

That's what SRV was chasing, after all.

I wouldn't want to be making tonal choices on the basis of vids on YouTube, though. Even if you're piping your computer through a really fine hi-fi...

In pursuit of the 'lost chord' again......good luck to all you pilgrims out there. What gave us the Hendrix sound has cast aside his mortal coil years ago. We shall see none like him again. There may be others, gifted and unique in their own right but "often imitated, never duplicated' reigns supreme here.

Ditto for all the other heros.

Well - 'zactly.

"How can changing a piece of hardware make me sound like the nearest thing to heaven this side of the Pearly Gates?" Answer: it can't.

Yet if we counted, I expect "which pickups?" is the commonest thread on this site.

I have many different pickups in various project guitars. But I've yet to find a reason to swap out those that come ready fitted in a stock US guitar. Sadly, it's with the fingers that the journey must really begin.

In other words, log out, plug in and turn up...

You have to remember that because hendrix turned the guitar upside down and his bass strings were on the treble side of the pickup, and vice versa, he achieved a very unique sound. Yeah.

Custom Shop Texas Specials are very, very good. I haven't played every pickup in the world, but I've played many different ones. I have these and they are very, very good. Noise is reduced somehow compared to a lot of oem pickups I've auditioned, especially with the tone at 6 or 3. With the tone at 10, there's more hum, but shifting to a hum cancelling position of 2 or 4 gets rid of it. These are less high output than oem Highway Ones, noticeably less. They are vintageish, although not pure 54s, because they were modeled on SRV's Strat, and it was like a '59 or something that just happened to have overwound pickups. If you go high gain, they do take on a SRV-like sound that's extremely cool. For lead, up the volume to 10 and you've got a wicked lead that just liquid and sweet up on the neck or neck mid, and also very fine with the bridge. For chords, just roll the volume down to maybe 7 or 8 and you've got good definition and separation even with a Blues Junior near maximum volume. Played clean, these can be amazing. I set the guitar tones on 6, the guitar volume on 9, the BJ volume on 6 cleans up perfectly (turn up the master a little to compensate) eq at 7s across the board (no need to back off on treble with these). In neck and neck-mid, I'm getting almost like a built-in chorus of bells that's amazing. Bringing the bridge or bridge-mid gives classic Fender bell-like tones. For some quack, bridge-mid's good.

The Reverse Headstock 60s Strat I picked up also has the reverse slant to the bridge pickup. Basically a Left handed guitar.... with a right handed cutaway.... and a right handed bridge... strung for a righty. In case that didn't make any sense, here it is "in the flesh". It really is a well made guitar. When I bought it I expected to have to do some reworking, but so far all I did was change the tuners to "F" style and slap a 70's style "F" neck plate on it. I thought the one-ply guard would bother me, but the more I play it the less I notice it. (BTW the only reason I changed the tuners/neck plate, was because I had that stuff already... collecting dust.)
Just noticed these pic are pre "F" tuners. You get the idea though.... ImageImage

I saw one of these at GC for a good price last night. I seriously considered buying it right there. It seems like you have a lot of good things to say about it, strauboids. Very encouraging.

I picked mine up off the Musician's Friend site, which was the first time I'd bought a guitar, sight unseen. I don't know if I just lucked out with the one I landed, but I haven't got a single complaint so far. I haven't even had to set it up, other than fine tuning the intonation.
