Okay - I've been holding out on you all. I picked up an FSR American Standard Strat in Sonic Blue back over Labor Day weekend. With all the left-hand issues I've had over the years I just waited until I knew it was going to be a keeper and not headed back to Guitar Center.

So here she is - an American Standard in Sonic Blue. For some reason this one came with one of the black tolex Pro Series cases instead of the rectangular molded plastic case. Here's a couple of photos:

I agree. The last addition to my collection was Sonic Blue.

Sweet! :D I dig the retro look of the Pro Series cases. How do you like the Fat 50s pups?

Thanks guys!

A bit more than one month in I have to say I really like the Fat 50s pickups. I've never really liked the older American Standard pickups that well - I always preferred the sound of the old 57/62 pickups from the last generation of AV Strats. The Fat 50s are in that same ballpark - they have more of a "3-D" sound than the pickups they replaced.

The Strat is replacing an EBMM Albert Lee with a flat polepiece version of Duncan SSL-1 pickups - granted the main reason is that the EBMM neck isn't working for me. The bonus is the Fat 50s pickups really shine compared to the version of the Duncans installed in the AL - again more depth/"3-D" sounding.

Sonic Blue and rosewood neck is one of my favorite colors. It's much better than Dalphne Blue.

I guess you don't find the Fat 50s to be too much hotter than the 57/62s?

Daphne Blue better suits a maple neck.

orvilleowner - unfortunately I haven't owned an AV Strat since 2003 so I'm just going on fading memories of what it sounded like. What I always found is that the older American Standard/American Series pickups were like those Duncan SSLs in that Albert Lee - just lacking some depth that both the Fat 50s and the 57/62s have.

Plus I'm in a vastly different amp space now than I was back in 2003 - I was still using a Marshall DSL 401 back then; these days I'm using a Blues Jr. with a Full-Drive 2 for gain. I guess I have always had a thing for EL-84 amps.

@John C

Is the Beatle influence which led you in the decision to purchase the sonic blue rosewood-neck USA Standard FSR? (just joking :lol: )

Other than that, the Sonic Blue FSR is truly a great-sounding guitar. Enjoy it!
