I was just rereading The Stratocaster Chronicles and according to Fender historian Richard Smith the "transition" logo wasn't introduced until after CBS took control in 1965. Apparently the designer Bob Perine was never able to persuade Leo Fender to adopt the new larger logo but after Leo stepped down in 1965 Don Randall finally gave him the green light.

Since the new logo had already been used on the Jazz Bass (1960), the Bass VI (1961) and the Jaguar (1962) this anecdote doesn't really make much sense. Also this would mean that there are no true 1964 Strats with "transition" logos despite the fact that there are plenty of documented examples out there. Could these actually just be examples of Strats that were assembled in 1965 using leftover 1964 parts? I guess the most definitive proof would be to find a 1964-dated photo showing one of these "transition" models.

Can anyone shed some light on this mystery?

You are right, that doesn't make any sense. Clearly Leo was not against that design since they were using it on other models (as you mentioned).

I own one, neck dated Nov 1964, but I don't know for sure when it left the factory. I'll have to check to see what the earliest date with that logo is.

It just goes to show that some respected sources can be wrong sometimes.

It's also possible that the discrepancy is merely the result of a typo that occurred when the author's notes were transcribed.
