I posted this in here as it is Strat related.

I am shortly going to be the owner of a 'parts' Mustang with a '65 neck but more modern harware.
I know the pups are going to be bright/thin sounding and possibly toneless being a cheap brand so i am looking for opinions on a quality replacement.

I gather they use pups similar to a Strat so i have considered stuff like Gold or Red Lace Sensors and various Seymour Duncan.
I'm looking for a nice rounded sound and i admit i like to pile the gain on sometimes so a noiseless operation would be a bonus.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Lace Sensors for you, Sir. Silver at the neck, blue in the middle and a nice red at the bridge for all your gainful mayhem. You can buy that threesome as a set with covers in a choice of several colours.

I like a warm, rich jazzy sound at the neck, shifting through the positions to some real aggression at the bridge, smooth yet characterful and without that scratchiness of some pickups we could name. My Sensors do that for me: sounds about right for you too.

Question asked, question answered.

And if I'd been paying proper attention I'd have registered that you were speaking of a Mustang. Within which case try the silver or blue at the neck; red at the bridge.

Wake up, Ceri

Hehe, no probs, thanks!
I happen to have a GOLD 'chrome dome' Lace Sensor thats not being used. Do you think that would be too mellow for the bridge position?

Hmmm. My silver at the neck is 7k and to me that feels just right. So I guess 5.8k on the gold would be too low in output, even for the jazzy type sound I was describing.

But of course, I'm using it as part of a calibrated set. A certain Mr Clapton seemed to get on very nicely with a set of golds, if memory serves...

So perhaps stick the gold at the neck, see how you like it, and then choose a partner for the bridge accordingly? Seems to make sense.

Yeah, 5.8k does seem feeble but like you said Clapton and people like Jeff Beck have used them so i guess it depends on the FX used with them.
With the pickup being spare i could give it a trial but other than that the Red Lace is a good option. Billy Corgan got plenty of beef out of his.
Thanks Ceri.
