Hey folks...

I've got a question regarding the earlier MIM standard strat pickups... are they alnico or ceramic? I've got my eye on a loaded '92 standard to pair up with the '79 neck I just scored. Someone drilled it for a 4-bolt but it's in good shape and I only paid $300 for it. Anyhow, I was just wondering about the old MIM pickups... Thanks.

Actually, any info regarding these early MIMs would make for good reading... in looking on-line it seems there's a lot of conflicting info regarding parts, country of origin, pickup materials, electronics, and wood types... feel free to chime in on any of it.

MIM Standards have always used budget pickups with steel polepieces energized by ceramic bar magnets. I don't know what the specs are in terms of resistance and all, but the middle pickup is RWRP. And although many people like to swap them out for something better, there are also a lot of people who prefer them over the American Alnico pickups and have likened their tone to that of P-90's.

Thanks... I may well leave them alone, I could easily live with P-90 like tone. I don't want another major build project right now, just a bang around body to install the '79 neck on.

Years ago I had a similar setup with a '75 neck mounted to a MIM body and relatively cheap electronics and no hardware upgrades. That thing was a tone monster but absolutely KILLED my fingers and hands to play... I could never get the action down to a comfy level and eventually let it go... and have missed it ever since. This is essentially going to be a replacement for that guitar... though I'm hoping the playability of this one is a little better! I'm trying to remember what pickups that guitar had loaded in it... I think I either used some MIJ pickups from some RI (they weren't the US pups) or perhaps Fender 57/62s... I honestly don't remember, it was 7 or 8 years ago now.

Any reason to think that this isn't a '92 MIM standard? The saddles are stamped, it's a 3 ply guard... anything else I should be looking for?

Well... I decided against the '92 in favor of a newer 2011 MIM body from you know where. It was 10% off and now that they offer free shipping it seemed like a good deal to me. I figured if I wanted to upgrade the pickups down the road that it would be nice to have better electronics (CTS pots, etc.) I'm open to the idea of liking the stock pickups... time will tell. I'll get some pics of it once it's together.

Yes, the pick guard screw locations indicate that this is a Squier body.

Phew... glad I didn't buy that one! I thought the font on the knobs also looked a little wonky but I wouldn't have caught the screw spacing. Thanks!

You're welcome! I thought the same thing; I'm glad that you decided against it. :)
