Hi,

I'm looking for some very quiet and heavy (high output) single coils for my strat. I've never changed pickups before so I want some recommendations here.

I've been looking/listening a lot to the Red-Silver-Blue Lace Sensor pickups on Youtube and I like them clean but the red one in bridge seem to get a little too harsh at higher gain, even though it's that kind of thickness I want. DiMarzio seem like a good option but I can't find as many demos. In the ones I've found they don't seem heavy/thick enough, more like a SD SSL5 or something. Do DiMarzio have anything that's good for loud fuzz guitar? Are there any other brands I should check out? I'm not really looking for a humbucker, just a single coil with very high output.

Thanks!

I favor the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage series and have three Strats so equipped.

In my opinion, you should be looking at the single sized hums.

If you're looking for high output hum cancelled thick single sized, then that's pretty much the definition of a single sized hum. Those lace Sensors are awful at fuzz or just regular distortion.

If you go high output single, most likely, it hums louder when it happens. It all comes down to how much midrange you like. Seymour Duncans have plenty of it. But I would say that Duncans have a little more sizzle to them in the highs as opposed to Dimarzios. I've been more impressed with Dimarzios for the bridge. But I like the Duncan JB jr in the neck. It's one of my all time favorite pickups for the neck position. Full flavored bass tones. Very colorful.

Be wary of the Duncan Hot Rail. It's very bassy in the bridge. I've been happier with the Dimarzio Fast Track 2. I'd like to try a Fast Track which is supposed to have a little more treble. But haven't gotten around to it yet.

I think you'd be very happy with one of the Dimarzio Single Hums. Just read the descriptions and tone charts to try to decide which one. The Fast Track 2 is very thick and crunchy. I love mine.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for but it seems to me that you might be better served with an HSS guitar. Maybe a Pearly Gates trembucker and a couple of stacked singles in the middle and neck. Like Arjay, I am a fan of Dimarzio silent singles.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

This....but I was also thinking that the Seymour Duncan STK-S9 Hot Stack Plus might be a good option.

That could be a good option as well. Haven't really tried one myself. Based on their tone chart, that pickup is oozing midrange. I think anytime you're shopping for a pickup, you should pay close attention to the B/M/T section to help determine what you're looking for. Some people really like big mids, some more treble, etc. at that point it's personal taste. I'm sure that Hot Stack would distort just fine if Duncan lists it as hot (or high output).
