Hello. New here. Warning. Pic heavy thread...

I am buying this strat from someone and we have been together trying to trace it's origins. Malmsteen strats did not come black until 1991 apparently and but this one 'seems' to be from 1989, :?

The neck is definitely a 1988 Malmsteen neck but the body has 1989 date stamp. Could this body be a refinish or is it a throwaway from the factory?

Any ideas or insight appreciated. :)

Why not a neck made in December 1988 and body January 1989 ?

Because black ones were not officially released until 1991. Strange.

Actually, the Body is stamped: MAR 16 1989. And, by all appearances, it looks genuine to me.

What's your source on the info regarding release date for the Black body YM ?? Perhaps this is in error.

BTW... Welcome !! :)

cheers!

That looks like an American standard body. It would be easy to swap it onto a YJM neck and pickguard assembly. And bingo, you'd have a black '89 Malmsteen.

Edit: it doesn't have micro-tilt, got any more pictures of the body (without pickguard)?

My friend got a reply from Fender.

Quote:
Thanks for writing in!

The Malmsteen Stratocaster wasn’t actually offered in Black until 1991. It’s possible that they kept the same serial set-up when they reintroduced the Malm. Which would make the SE8 prefix seem to attach to 1988. Either way, they were made in black, but not until 1991.

There whas nothing special inside. Just holes for the pickups all black, no stickers etc...

I like those better than the later large headstock models.

I have 7 Malmsteen strats from 1989 to 1997 and I had 10 in my life and I NEVER SEEN black Malmsteen strats in 20 years...
This is a black standard american body to me... Show us the 11 pickguard holes  I'm sure there is 12 drilled holes. The 12th one to put a '62 pickguard. Normally "MLMSTN" is written in the neck pocket as you can see here:

I sold this body some years ago...
I don't see very well but I see just one TBX on Tone 1 not on Tone 2... :?
Hey look! I have an Aztec Gold Malmsteen strat!!! 8) They made this model just for me!

I'm kidding! I bought an Aztec Gold body and put a Malmsteen neck and Malmsteen pickguard with 100% genuine electronics from one of my others Malmsteen strats...
