Could this be a black over Maui Blue or just a strange paint reaction as the seller is suggesting? Regardless, it's pretty ugly, but might be the perfect body for my heavy metal strat idea that I'm cooking up...

It's hard to tell - that reaction looks a bit "blue-er" than the paint cracking you see on the Leads from that era (including my wine red Lead) but that could just be the photos.

That was a usual reaction? Glad I never got a Lead.

Hard to tell from the photo, but the body of this type must be very heavy one.

Oh I'm sure it weighs a ton...

I'm leaning away from it the more I consider my options. I'd like to get a real 70's strat neck but I may pair it with a MIM 70's RI and go from there, though I do like the hardtail.

It looks real to me (given my limited experience). The discoloration could easily be a reaction - there are so many formulas for Black that many contain either blue pigments or blue primers.

My question is what is so special about such a 'vintage' body? How are they 'better'?? These are very expensive compared with some very good aftermarket bodies available today, and since you're gonna refinish anyway... I am truly asking the question, because I can see a body like this, refinished properly, costing you $800-$1000, for what will end up as a partscaster.

I can see spending big money on a neck, hardware, electronics, but not on a body for a project guitar.

Still, it's your $$, your time and ultimately your guitar, so no value judgement here.

Interested in your reply.

cheers!

Very good point. It makes the most sense if one had a '70s neck to pair with it.
A nice Warmoth body can be gotten for a good price.

Here's my Lead - it isn't that bad compared to a lot of them (plus the red was better about it than the black). I took this photo about 9 years ago and it is a bit more cracked than it was then - in this shot it kind of shows the cloudy part:

Here's a photo of a Lead body in black:

Was that about the same time of the 25th Anniversary Strats and the trouble they with its original finish? What was the story, Fender was trying to switch to a water based finish for environmental issues?

I was primarily interested in it because I thought that it may have been an International color series body that had a factory black paint job over the top of it, making it unique. I suspect now that it's simply the aforementioned finish reaction/flaw.

I would not be interested in refinishing it anyhow... the neck I'm looking at has a good amount of honest wear and I was looking for a body that had similar aging. I don't think those old CBS bodies have any particular mojo... if anything, they make better boat anchors than bodies but I do have a thing for 70's strats and big headstocks.

Realistically though, you're right... I'd be far better off using an MIM 70's RI body... you can get one loaded off ebay for less that the original 70's body, and that would include all the hardware and electronics. I'm just not sure if the original neck and RI body would actually be a good (properly functioning) match. If it was, then that would be a better option and I could just age the body to match the neck...

OK.... Now it makes perfect sense !

Thanks for the reply.

Good Luck !

cheers!

That's the story I've heard - plus I've also heard that the Lead bodies weren't necessarily completely dried out before they were finished. That red and black made its way on to Strat and possibly some Tele bodies there in 1979-1980. I think that Fender went back to the previous style of polyurethane finish on the other models pretty quickly but they must have had a bunch of the Lead bodies stockpiled because you see the cracking finish on them from introduction in late 1979 through most of 1981.

For sure that pearl white finish for the 25th Anniversary Strats was the worst of the three finishes for cracking and clouding.
