I'm looking at buying a 1985 MIJ Strat with the Schaler Tremolo system. The guy has removed the lock down block at the head and installed a couple of string trees. He then locked down the tremolo screw adjustments to disable the tremolo.

I would like to use the tremolo again but I don't want to put the lock down block back on. I want to be able to just use the tuners normally.

If I install locking Sperzel tuners will that keep it in tune when I use the tremelo? The guitar plays great but I want it to stay in tune.

Thanks!

It wouldn't hurt, although I'd try it first without modification to see if you can make it stay in tune. Are you planning on EVH style dive-bombing with it?

Lubricate the nut really well with some pencil and make sure the strings are secured well around the tuning heads and give it a whirl. I have no trouble keeping my Fender trem in tune (I don't divebomb), so I would imagine a more modern design could do just as well if not better.

I don't plan on dive bombing but I want to use it as an effect. I know that the block the guy removed if supposed to keep it in tune but it is a hassel every time you change the strings or want to retune.

Thanks for the advice on the lead. I just wanted to get someones opinion before I bought the guitar and spent the money on locking tuners. I didn't know if they made a big difference with that kind of tremelo.
