Here are some photos of an American Stratocaster. Can anyone help me identifying it? Like what material it is made of, or if has any particular upgrades.

I know nothing about guitars and want to sell it, but I need info as to how to describe it.

So is it a standard model? Or is it upgraded from the standard model?

The RS Standard was made in Mexico and sported a 21-fret rosewood fretboard, passive electronics and a Floyd Rose II trem.

The guitar in question is the American-made version with the growing stars, original Floyd tremolo and Elite electronics.

The pickguard is not stock IMO, USA Sambora Strats feature switchable Elite electronics with a push-push switch to bypass the MDX boost pot. Tuners are also not stock, ditto for the backplate.

This guitar has been assembled from miscellaneous parts; not a genuine Sambora Strat, possibly a fake or a partscaster.

Standard Richie Sambora signature model. In 1991, Fender issued the Richie Sambora signature Stratocaster model which featured an original Floyd Rose tremolo system and an HSS combination of DiMarzio PAF Pro humbucking and 2 Fender Texas Special single-coil pickups. This guitar came in two versions; American and later in 1996, Japanese.

US-made Sambora model featured an alder body with ash veneers and was available in Cherry Sunburst and Olympic White, while the Japanese version had an alder body with black paisley graphics (ltd) and a Snow White Finish. The one you show indicates US made 2007/08 model.

Other features included a one-piece maple neck/fingerboard with 22 frets and star-shaped position markers, as well as a 25dB active mid-boost circuit (US version only) with TBX (US & Japanese) tone controls and an active/passive push-button switch.

Nothing special really... You can buy them all day for $300, usually less.

The one you show has pretty fair fret wear and non-original pickguard (plastic sheeting not removed) indicating some mods to electronics... this one would fall into the usually less category.

cheers!

Sorry to break it to you, but there are 5 RS Strats out there right now between CL, eBay and other sources and they're priced from a low of $225 to a high of $325 (optimistic), the avg. being $298. At least 3 of the 5 are in 'better condition' (insofar as they're unmoddified) than the one you're showing.

In the end, the Market dictates price. For a USA-made Strat, the RS model seems to be on the low end. Maybe it's the funky electronics or the 'Star' inlays, but something about this git makes it less desireable than many MIM models pricewise.

You can list it for any price you want, but the true value will be what you actually can sell it for.

cheers!

I believe it is a Chinese fake. The tuners, truss rod plug, serial number should start with an S, the trem cover screw pattern, no micro-tilt, low quality wood, and even the strap buttons are suspect.

I agree with orvilleowner on this one - it's a fake. It looks like it is supposed to be a USA Sambora (per the 22-fret neck) but it's not. It isn't the MIM Sambora - they had 21 frets and an MIM serial number while this beast has what looks like a USA serial number. Plus the USA had an OFR and the MIM had the Floyd Rose II - and this guitar has a no-name Floyd copy.

And these Chinese fakes are selling for about $275, not counting the shipping charges, which can be pretty high.

I dunno, the Serial # checks out to be USA-made, '07/'08. I thought it had been discontinued before that, but I just don't know.

cheers!

Fake as fake can get.. The bridge, nut, logo, colour, pickguard... In fact the whole thing just looks cheap.

Nothing more than a cheap, Chinese knock-off.

If it was a real Richie Sambora Stratocaster, eBay seems to be around $2k-$4k, but a lot of eBay sellers are dreamers. However, count yourself very lucky if you even get a tenth of that price.

A lot of these Chinese fakes do use a fake serial number that is a real Fender serial number - a tip off is that you will find that bunches of them have identical numbers. Plus this one has a decal that is pretty close to the real thing. That being said I'm 95% sure that this style Sambora was discontinued at the end of 1999 or the beginning of 2000 when it was replaced by a revised model with a vintage trem.

@John C

Those revised Samboras had 12dB of gain boost thanks to the two resistors in the MDX pot.

Removing the resistors will restore the full 25dB feature of the 1st generation RSes.
