Misinformation spreads.

If you take it apart, you'll see it is clearly Japanese.

That stamping was done after lacquering.

Unlike Gibson, Fender never used stamping for serial numbers or the Made In info.

A pictures of pots and switch ( under the pickgard ) will tell if it is a American made Fender . Import Fender do not use same electonics parts.

Those things could be changed of course, so look at the solder joints. That is not an American bridge, so I doubt anything has been upgraded.

Interesting info guys :) do you think i should upgrade this? Or leave it as it is? It feels nice to play and sound is pretty meaty ;) would it be worth upgrading pickups/parts?

That's entirely up to you. If your happy with the sound and feel leave it be. Sometimes you gotta say if it ain't broke...don't fix it.

From what I've seen, Fender didn't stamp that. Someone else did in order to pass a Japanese guitar as an American made one to squeeze a few extra dollars from unsuspecting buyers.

I can see what you mean with the bubbling of the laquir, but I have seen these guitars back in the '90s. I ran into about 10 of them, brand new in a music store. At first I thought they were fakes, but they are really Fender guitars.

Hi ,i would say the neck is deffo a japanese standard neck (i have an 89 std mij) but i would say the body and hardware are far too clean to be from 89 , the pup covers and knobs are usually very yellowed and you would epect to see plenty of rust / crud on the bridge ect . and as stated fender never stamped made in usa on the necks , cheers
Alan

Well i know for a fact the guy who gave it to me has had it for around 20 years or more....but its basically sat in a case or on a stand since he purchased...hes not really a player...more of a collector of things he just likes lol :) its never really been played until now! Im waiting to hear from fender UK to see if they can shed any light on the issue.

We probably need to start a couple more threads about this same subject, as we only have two at the moment.

I don't know much but I can research pretty well.

That is an '89-'90 Made In Japan Serial number, but I found this exception in - Fender Support - U.S. Instruments Product Dating - "odd serial numbers" (about 3/4 down the page):

I(XXXXXXX) - A limited number of these “I” series guitars were made in 1989 and 1990. They were made for the export market and have “Made in USA” stamped on the neck heel.

Guess that makes it REAL!

Its pretty sad we all have to hudle in a guild to determine where a Fender Stratocaster was made.
Japan Mexico Korea USA
I remember when a Stratocaster was a prize and it came from one place USA.
Now they slap that name and logo on all kinds of Junk, that's just so sad.
At least my Gibson Les Paul will always say Made in USA.
Otherwise its a Epiphone or Orville but Gibson will never be on an Import.
Fender should have been snobby about their name too.
Anything not made in USA should have been a Squire or the Mexicans could have been called Freddy Fenders.
That's what I call them

Well according to latest news...mine probably was made in the usa! Woohoo! :) actually ive played some lovely japanese strats before....i think it really does vary from strat to strat.....probably all guitars are a bit different, i also play an agile les paul...($400-$500) its better then my two previous gibson les pauls i had! Better tone...stays in tune better.
