Fishman makes a transducer that converts sound waves into electrical energy....i.e. acoustic-electric guitar.

What controversy?

There was a great deal of mail on this forum some weeks back regarding whether or not KWS and Fender were going to bring out a signature series guitar.

The musical genre which Mayer chose to bring himself to prominence was a brilliant stroke. Had he pursued a strictly blues track he likely would never have gained the broad popular appeal he has. It is for that reason that I never fully appreciated his ability as a player because that aspect of his performance is played down in his commercial stuff.

Mayer is not seen to rip into blues other than in concert and even then, it does not constitute the bulk of his portfolio. I see him as very SRV influenced both in style and, matter of factly, in the design of his signature series guitar. I take nothing away from him as an artist. He can certainly hold his own with the greats, witness the NYC park concert with Eric. I found his tone right in there with Eric's and that Crossroads piece was superb.

It is likely that, were he to do a blues-based CD I would have interest in it. At the moment, I do not collect his work, but do recognize and appreciate his musicianship.

I am sorry for being slow but what is KWS? I must have missed the thread you are speaking of. What was their reason for wanting or thinking about discontinuing his signature?

Kenny Wayne Shepherd was rumoured to be brokering a deal with Fender to produce an Artist's Series Signature guitar.....like the Clapton, the SRV, the Mayer, etc. (see Products Section for further enlightment).

This caused a great deal of interest and mail. I believe where all of this left off was that he was touring with two prototypes, and the final product may be marketed by September.

This remains to be confirmed. If you are not familiar with this artist, do a bit of research. Like Mayer, he has a strong SRV influence, and is a very powerful blues player whose work I have no doubt that you will enjoy.

Thanks for explaining that, and thanks for the heads up. I still don't understand why him having a signature model would jeopardize Mayer's signature.

Re: "I still don't understand why him having a signature model would jeopardize Mayer's signature."

None of the preceding discussions address anything to do with Mayer's signature. It was never at issue. The term 'signature' referred to "Artist Signature Series" guitars.

Some where in the histories, if you care to search, you can retrieve KWS' post on his talks with Fender.

He is also seen in the videos from the NAMM convention earlier this year.

Hey guys. Just a pondering about John Mayer. To all you JM fans out there, how interested would people be if Fender would sell the big dippers separately from the JM strat. I mean, those scooped mids are stellar. Also, does anyone know of any aftermarket PUp that sounds similar to the dippers? I was listening to some sound bytes on DiMarzio and it seems that the Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues PUPs sounded somewhat similar to that of Sir John's style. Peace, Love.

Hey SRV86. I am right there with you, I love the Big Dipper PU's, my #1 is a JM Sig Strat. I looked high and low for after market PU's close to the BD's to go in a Frankenstrat, and my MIM 60's Reverse. I didn't have a lot of luck finding pu's with a scooped mid but did find that if you go with overall weaker PU you can get a pretty close to the Big Dippers.

For the Reverse I with with the 69 Custom Shop, but those are are not as weak pu's as I would have liked, the guitar still sounds great but different from the BD's, for the Frankenstrat I went with GFS PU's specifically the GFS "Premium II" Alnico and I am very pleased, IMO the closest you can find to an after market Big Dipper, and the added bonus is the set of GFS's were less then what you can find 1 Big Dipper for out on EBay.

I would love for fender to sell these pups! Closest thing I've found that has a nice blues sound that's quite clean yet still vintage sounding is the bareknuckles irish tour pickups! I own 14 guitars and have pick-ups ranging from fender custom shop 69s, texas specials, stock standard, stock tele, lindy fralin vintage hot, lindy fralin blues. I have to say the best overall is the bareknuckles, expensive yes, but you get what you pay for. the difference when you first put them in is subtle. But hook your guitar up to a good tube amp(fender supersonic, blues deluxe reissue 62) and play thru a keeley katana boost and it's pure mayer tone and magic!
