Hey guys. Just a pondering about John Mayer. To all you JM fans out there, how interested would people be if Fender would sell the big dippers separately from the JM strat. I mean, those scooped mids are stellar. Also, does anyone know of any aftermarket PUp that sounds similar to the dippers? I was listening to some sound bytes on DiMarzio and it seems that the Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues PUPs sounded somewhat similar to that of Sir John's style. Peace, Love.

If one theory holds true, you may receive a reply from the great man himself on this one. But will you know...?

Can't say I'd be all that interested. I can scoop out mids easily enough with an EQ pedal and/or the knobs on the amp. my understanding is they're relatively low output too. I don't think I'd find that too useful. I could see having a scooped-mid pup with HIGH output to use for lead and solos though.

I've heard they're duncan made pups, but i haven't found them on the site. I'd love to have a strat with the big dippers.

I'm interested in the sound they provide but I'd be kicking myself if Fender ever puts them out for sale separate from the strat. I bought a loaded JM strat body on ebay to get the pickups for a project. Then again, I liked the Cypress Mica color for the project anyways, so no regrets.

He's been known to do that in the past. KWS did so, recently during the controversy over his association w/Fender and the possibility of a Signature series guitar.

On those DiMarzio Heavy Blues....I swapped them into a Buddy Guy Polka Dot I had around for awhile. Good choice if you like a real dark tone.

Hello SRV86, I completely agree that it would be awesome if big dippers were available aftermarket...

I wish they would sell the John Mayer "Big Dipper" pickups by themselves. I would buy them.

Somebody made a post that had a link to site that contained info on John's guitars. There was one page that talked about his Big Dippers, and that they were basically the same pickups in the SRV Strat, but they were just wound a little differently.

John Mayer is quite possibly the greatest contemporary blues guitarist and singer/songwriter his age (30, if I remember correctly), alongside Joe Bonamassa (if anyone would like to debate me on my assertion, feel free to school me because you probably know more than I do about the genre). He has a MySpace music page, is available at virtually all major music retailers, and is currently touring North America. He's very heavily influenced by SRV and if you get a chance to hear him play live, I couldn't reccomend it more (check youtube for a some of his live performances). I haven't played his guitar very much, but when my budget is a little more flexible, I'm determined to pick one up. Go to your local music shop and ask about it. Try plugging into a '65 Reverb and see if it's for you.

the main difference between dose pickups are that the Texas Specials are HOT pickups with a lot of mid-range but the Big Dipper pickups is low-output and has scooped mids meaning less mids
so they are basically just the opposite of eachother.....

checked him out on youtube playing with buddy guy live. your right Brendan he's a great player. his solo on the live track (sweet home chicago) sounded very mid boosted. I clicked another video he's playing a monterey strat thats very mid scooped to the point that its almost acoustic. Surely playing an acoustic or even fishman equipped ala townsend would be more productive than having mid scooped pickups. To my ear as soon as the mids leave guitars sound very one dimensional whoever they are made by. Mid frequencies are what the human ear is most attuned to.
