I always thought there was only one "transition logo" used on 1964/1965 Strats (small headstock) reading "With Synchronized Tremolo" on the first line and the four patent numbers on the second line extending out on either side (shown below):

Then I came across a vintage '65 Strat on eBay with a slightly different version. It's the same as the one above but the patent numbers are bunched together so they fit directly under the first line without extending out on the sides (see below):

Is this just a weird fluke or a true variation?

Legitimate variation.

Hmmmm, the order of the patent numbers was changed.

It seems like this variation could go between the third and fourth decal shown above. On the last "spaghetti" logo the spacing of the patent numbers is tightly packed just like on the mystery "transition" logo. Maybe this was this very first "transition" logo which was quickly revised and replaced by the more common wider-spaced version. If this was indeed a legitimate variation you'd think it would have been mentioned in the Vintage Guitar Info website (the bible for vintage specs and parts information). Also, as orvilleowner pointed out the second and third patent numbers are reversed. Weird...

I've never given it any thought, but I haven't previously made note of a logo ever being covered by a string tree.
