Hey y'all, just got a new John Mayer Strat about a month or 2 ago... I love the guitar, love the pickups and the way it plays. It played absolutely amazing right out of the box. However... I wanted to try the old "floating tremolo" thing, and did a whole new setup on it, (which was a stupid idea). Every since then, I haven't been able to get the fret buzz out of the thing. I've tried Raising the action up, I've tried giving it more relief, I've put the bridge back down on the guitar like it originally came, I just can't get it right. I don't really know what to do at this point, and can't really afford to go to a Tech to get it set up because I kinda live out in the sticks. lol anyways, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi ghostdog7377 and welcome to the forum. Sounds like you've got a nice guitar and a challenge on your hands.

It's really hard to give advice with so little to go on. If you haven't changed the Nut or Saddle heights, then the problem is most likely in your relief and/or Bridge height. The Bridge height is determined by the six screws holding it to the body and the spring tension in back.

That is if you haven't changed the neck orientation to the body at the neck pocket. It's all inter-related as you're learning.

One of our more accomplished members, Ceri, recently gave some good advice that you might heed in the future, accurately measuring all aspects when you have a guitar set up just the way you like it: relief, action, bridge height, etc. Makes it a lot easier to get back there.

You probably need to go back to square one with your set up. A good place to start is with Fender's own Stratocaster® Setup Guide here: http://www.fender.com/support/articles/stratocaster-setup-guide/

More capable members may have better practical advice for you. Posting pictures may be required and would certainly be desired.

Good Luck,

- Dan

If you haven't yet look under the support section for the strat set up guide and follow that

Much appreciated guys. I know it's got to be somewhere with the relief or the bridge height, and I have went by the fender book before, but got away from it trying all kinds of different stuff again. lol anyway, thanks, and I will try it again.

Ok, been going by the fender setup by the book, but I still can't get the fret buzz out of this thing. Really annoyed at this point. :x It is driving me crazy. Is there a setup guide for the John Mayer strat aside from a regular strat? Don't know what to do at this point.

Do you know anyone with more experience with guitars?

If no one can give you hands on help, you might need to consult with a professional.

Hey ghostdog, no, there's no "specific" setup guide exclusive to a John Mayer Strat. It's a great guitar, but it's based on vintage Fender specs.

Setting up a Strat is a reasonably straightforward project, Step "a" followed by Step "b", but if you're unfamiliar with it it can seem like juggling jello because it's all interconnected.

You might need "hands on" help like orvilleowner recommended and if you're not able to find a reasonably knowledgeable person to work with, you will need a repair tech/luthier to look it over and advise you. You can learn an awful lot by talking it out with a tech if they want to spend a little time with you.

If you're determined to work it out by yourself first, consider this, if the guitar didn't buzz before you adjusted the action and relief, and you didn't loosen the bolts holding the neck to the body, I'd look at the relief first, then the action. There are online tutorials for these things which might be helpful for you.

Do you understand the instructions on setting the relief and action correctly? Your guitar must be tuned to pitch for full tension of the strings pulling on the neck before you adjust the relief or action.

If it's just one or two strings that have buzzing check the saddle heights, they may be too low, and adjust the set screws in the saddles.

Do it one step at a time, double check your work and if you're unsure of a step or have a specific question you can ask it here.

Good luck to you, I know how you feel, I was there a few short years ago,

- Dan

Lol thanks y'all. yeah I'm getting there actually. I was reALLY just frustrated last night, but I let it sit for a day, and came back to it, and am doing smaller adjustments on it. Almost got the buzz out of it. I work on my own stuff, that way I KNOW what I have. the only thing I won't touch is fret work. lol
