There's a nice tone coming out of that amp but the guitar, of course, is only part of the signal chain. Unlike David Gilmour, Clapton's EQ has never been made public knowledge in all the years we've been writing about it here.

Nice rendition! One of my favorite tunes to do too. Good tone and riffage!

Both artists chose the active stuff for different reasons.

Gilmour switched to the active EMGs not for the creamy humbucker tones he got from them (as opposed to Clapton, who opted for the best of both worlds) but because of the 60-cycle buzz associated with single coils, which was an annoying problem with the huge rack of effects he used at the time and the electrical interferences caused by stage lights.

Thanks Miami Mike! It's one of my favourite songs too. I'm the drummer in the band but I figured other guitar players, especially Fender players, would enjoy hearing this guy.

We're talking apples and oranges here. Eldred told us why Clapton made the switch from LS's. Fender sent him the VN's to tryout and he liked them better. I have no doubt that there was more than altruism in their motivation to do so. What's in the loop here is that Gilmour's website will provide you with info as to the gear you can acquire commercially to pursue his tone. No one's ever been able to find out how Clapton EQ's his amps. I couldn't even trust the settings on the amps I saw closeup and personal at the NYC auction.

I like the early 90's version of OLD LOVE better: from EC's screaming solos to Nathan East's solid bass lines and Greg Phillinganes' sublime piano passages, this amazing rendition of Robert Cray's classic has it all! :D

I don't care so much for Tim Carmon's snoozing synth leads on the later version of the song. :?
