Hi all need advice on guitars this will be my first time buying a guitar let alone

touching or playing one I decided on a squier affinity but theres two choices

Regular or fat strat. I've done some research on them regular single coil

pickups and the fat has the humbucker. I know the single has the hum noise

everyone talks about but what are the disadvantages of the humbucker if

there are any. I really like to hear any input was gonna try the standard

squire strat but it says the wood is made from agathis I hear alder is better.

This is nothing to get psicotic about!

Your needs are one of comfort and playability at this juncture. Tone is the least of your concerns. Man, you don't even have calluses on your fingers!

With some assistance from someone who knows, make a budget selection It should have a well crafted neck without any fret-end spurs or 'fret sprout'. and hold its setup and tuning. If you pick carefully among the fruit, you can find a 'goodie.' A single pickup guitar like an Esquire-type would do nicely at this point, if you want to go electric, as well as an economy amp.

In a year, if you've really come along, and dare to commit, you can start building your collection.

If I told you what I started out with 50 years ago, you'd freak!

The choices available these days are awesome.

Good luck.

Doc

I agree with Doc. You should (if at all possible) have a guitar player with you when you go a lookin. Someone who can make sure the guitar is playable enough to not deter you from practicing. There's nothing worse then tryig to learn how to play on a guitar that hurts to play. Those fret ends can be fairly painful. If the action is too high your fingers are going to hurt trying to hold them down. If you can't have someone with you, I'd say don't buy the cheapest axe. A used mexican standard is cheap (check craigslist) and is far less likely to deter you from playing then an Affinity.

Good advice from everyone. Just another note: be aware, if you are not already, that with budget brands such as Squier you can also purchase a package that includes a small practice amp and other bits and pieces like a cable.

If you take to the guitar then you'll outgrow all of this gear in due course, but there is no cheaper way to purchase an instrument and amp than one of these "starter packs", and at the price the quality is remarkable.

Welcome, and best of luck!
