My view is if a certain type works for you that's great!
From what I have read and bear in mind this is not from my own research, the original bumble bee caps were a mylar/paper with foil type for low voltage types and oil was used in high voltage applications only. The modern Gibson bumble bee repro was plastic and foil.
There is an interesting article by Ed Wilson discussing this.
Some new aftermarket bumble bee caps I presume are PIO and could well sound different as well :D

OK The Original Grey Tiger and Bumble Bee were PIO in the 50s and the Original Black Beauty was as well.
You can see a little fill spout with a solder plug.
Also Black Beauty PIO was printed in Yellow and Foil in Orange.
Now the Bumble Bee and Black Beauty and Grey Tigers of today from Lux are foil.
Foil and Polyester sound similar but Foil does add a Lisp I like to call a Skrill in the tone.
Its basically a Q factor
PIO or Paper in oil is super creamy and smooth and makes a huge I repeat a huge difference.
You don't need sound waves or meters to detect it, its impact is amazing.
It can be compared to the difference in tube and transistor amps.
Vitamin Q makes them, I prefer the Russian because the specs are military and tight.
Like Russian Groove Tubes are better than China Groove tubes.

For instance in My Gibson Les Paul Custom I used two .022 PIOs
The bridge darkened up to a nice smooth Vintage sound even on a 498t 13.5k Alnico 5.
In my 57 Classic neck position the .022 was to dark and the pickup no longer cut through for leads.
I switched to a .015 PIO this cured that problem.
Now it worked perfect in the American Deluxe Strat in all positions making the guitar much more smooth and Classic sounding.
The smooth classic sound can be achieved best with Gibson vintage style 2 conductor wiring and Fender Vintage Cloth wiring as this adds capacitance as well.
Four conductor wiring is modern and actually conducts better as does the plastic coated wires of today.
I learned this from an engineer on the Gibson Boards, he is very helpful.

In my American Standard Stratocaster I used a foil Orange Drop 715 and its bright and Scrinchy adding a nice Lisp.
I also used the 716 Orange Drops in my Les Paul Standard that has the same pickups as my custom but 4 conductor wire. With these you can use the .022 in both positions without over darkening the neck.
A good example of a Orange Drop Les Paul sound is Slash.

Hey thanks Donny. I did dig a little further and it does seem like the very originals were PIO but later 50s mylar so I suppose you just have to be aware of what you are buying especially if it is vintage.
Lets not go down the oxygen free copper and star earth wiring road else you're gonna be rewiring your guitar and amp!
Checked out your playing and enjoyed it too! Keep rockin :D

Well thank you :)

I suggest the Russian stuff for real its affordable and very tight specs.
NOS or Vintage stuff can be a gamble as PIOs have been known to leak or dry up.
PIO is absolutely the BOMB like tubes are its a must in achieving a smooth classic sound.

You are mostly right. He has custom stacked humbuckers in the neck and bridge positions. And one of Jeff's 2 favorites has the Suhr pickups, I can't recall the maker of the pickups in his other Strat - it's not Fender, Seymour, DiMarzio or any other common brand.

I just wanted to add that Jeff did use a basswood body for a long time. But now his 2 go to Strats aren't basswood. One is poplar and the other is alder. I don't know which one has the Suhrs. Pretty cool that he basically uses a HSH Strat and IMO SSS just looks better. I think the body of the Fender Jeff Beck Imitation series is cut for going with HSH if you want to do that.

Each of these claims to be Jeff Becks personal set up

Jeff favors 1 strat he doesn't even use the Fender Pickups he uses Suhr

He also has a basswood body as he broke his original body.

He has 7 other duplicates that he doesn't want much to do with he prefers the one.

The pickups Jeff uses on his personal guitar are custom-wound Fender stacked humbuckers designed by John himself during his Custom Shop days in the early-to-mid 1990s.

The guitar in question sports a fat baseball bat neck from a Midnight Purple '93 and the old Wilkinson Roller Nut.

Hi there :)
Thanks for replying
I think Jeff is simply the most incredible active strat player there is.
The man is amazing.

I consider him the GOAT! I think it's funny that swapped out his go to basswood body for a poplar body. I'm pretty sure if you order a Stratocaster body from Warmoth, poplar is by far the cheapest option. I don't know the advantages or disadvantages of poplar, but it's almost like he's reminding us how well he can play even using a body that doesn't cost much to make. It kind of reminds me of what someone posted earlier about how he will take his music in a different direction if people start liking his old stuff. He's a funny guy.

In the future, I do think his music will be appreciated more as well as his talent. I think he gets overlooked a lot especially when magazines like Rolling Stone publish arbitrary rankings. It probably has to do with the fact that he comes off as a pretty quiet/reserved guy and doesn't care about being the center of attention. Maybe if he took a page out of the Gene Simmon's playbook on self promotion he'd end up closer to where he belongs when people or magazines discuss the GOATS.
