You handled that quite well. The type of cap, as well as the value, has an impact on the sound produced, whether a tone cap in a guitar, or coupling cap in an amp. Yes, it is science and not opinion. Hearing ability may be a factor, but one that doesn't change the facts.

Yeah I have experienced Frank a few times. He has some real good info sometimes but he gets moody.
I don't know if its meds wearing off or he is a drinker, but like I said me and Frank go back a ways.

As for Caps, my favorite modern Les Paul player is hands down Slash I like his sound a lot.
In my Les Pauls I didn't like an Alnico 2 in the bridge as much I liked the Gibson 498t.
I wired the tone pots 50s with .022 Orange Drops like Slash's.
I have actual pictures of the Appetite Les Paul and his Custom shops controls.

He is the definitive Les Paul sound in my book.
My Les Pauls sound very close to his.

I currently wire my Strats American Standard OEM Stock Fender and will stay with that.
Jeff Becks sounds is my favorite Modern Strat sound.
I am using the little Orange Drop stock Fender but think I will up it to the
Sprague 225P ORANGE DROP Capacitors
I tried that .01 you suggested but I like the .022 better.

And some people are extra sensitive to snake oil salesmen and the placebo effect.

I can actually hear the difference between Ceramic discs Foil and Paper in oil.

Not only when turned down to 0 but your capacitor effects your open signal too.
A capacitor stores power that's how it works, so if you have a foil wrap or oil its going to store more and have better tolerances.
Your going to hear it more in overdriven sounds on foil and cleaner tones will be more lush in paper in oil.
But a $14 set of PIO black cats will sound the same as a $50 set of PIO bumble bees as long as the value is the same.
Voltage has no bearing on Guitar audio either, only when used in amplifiers.

That's pretty much what I said, just because some people can't hear a difference, they foolishly dismiss that there is a difference. It isn't a matter of opinion, it is a matter of whether or not one can hear any difference. The actual difference between different types and values of caps is something that can be shown with empirical evidence, ie different charging rates, different frequency responses, etc, which can be seen by analyzing the signal with a scope. Some people wouldn't be able to hear the difference between a 1 kHz signal and a 1.1 kHz signal, but who is ignorant enough to say that there is no difference?

If a tree in the forest falls on a band that sucks, would anyone care?

Not sure but all his models come with orange drops now, I have wondered if that's a foil cap or PIO.

I know that is the original and the other picture is a Custom Shop Appetite model.
Im of the mind that is an old vintage foil cap in the original then.

Tried a .022 Orange Drop in my American Standard its more Scrinchy sounding.
Tried the .022 PIO in the American Deluxe it is smooth and toney I like both.
I like that they sound different.
Very Impressed with the PIO though wow what tone.
Anyone that says there is no difference and you cant hear it really has not installed and compared them.
Basically they gotta just be talking out their bottoms because wow is there ever a difference.
It is very cool to hear.

"Scrinchy sounding"? That's a new one, and I take it that it is good, but in a different way?

I believe that some people can't hear the difference, but they are foolish to say that there is no difference just because they can't hear it, when the difference can be seen in the waveform.

Now if you want to talk silly, Carbon Comps and mythical tone properties in the signal path of an amp.

There is NO way you couldn't hear this, especially the PIO.
The whole band heard the difference, it lit up the bridge,
smoothed it out and made it more vintage warm sounding.
The neck was to warm so I had to go to a .015
Now the Orange Drop if you didn't sleep with your guitar,
and know its wave form maybe I could buy that line.
But the PIO? Wow, it makes a huge difference.
I put it in my Les Paul Custom and My American Deluxe Strat.
Even the bass player could tell lol.
