I have a '76 model Strat with the stock style tremolo. I've often thought about having a Floyd Rose style tremolo installed. I know it would involve routing the body, altering the top of the neck for the locking nut, etc. What I'm wondering is if anyone here that has done it, or knows of someone who has, thinks it's worth the cost and trouble.

The set-up I have now isn't bad. In fact, it stays in tune fairly well, even after heavy tremolo use. However, I've replaced nearly ever piece of hardware on it, and the only modification left is a locking tremolo.

So, whaddya say?

It's an old picture, but it gets the point across . . .

In the hands of a competent luthier you could probably install Eric Clapton.

If you don't mind altering the body, ask around, get some good professional references, other opinions, and go for it.

Kinda sounds like you're wondering about the Floyd cos you've done everything else you can think of. Yet you say it already plays pretty well. Doesn't that mean leave well alone, and buy or build another guitar for your Floyd Rose excursions?

The Floyd was invented as a solution to a problem: if you've no problem you don't need a Floyd. They're a lot of hassle, after all.

James Tyler says he's spent the last 20 years longing for the Floyd thing to fade away, but he's still waiting...

If that is a authentic 76 Strat and not a re-issue,then you're crazy to have anything like that done to it.That guitar is considered vintage and if you're not aware of the market value, then maybe you should look into it before you end up doing something that you might regret. Why don't you just go out and buy a MIM with the Floyd Rose already on it?

Looking at the details in the photo, I suspect it's a bit late...

Thanks for all the replies! I often forget that it's vintage, since I've had it since it was new and tend to think more of my Walnut Strat as being the collectible one. However, considering the cost of the Floyd Rose and installation, it would make more sense just to apply that towards another instrument, especially since the current tremolo works well . . .

Fender used to make a Richie Sambora Strat that was actually pretty sweet.(Except for the fact that it had a Floyd, but... each to his own.) I'm pretty sure it came stocked with Dimarzios and star inlays. I expect eventually Fender will add a 70's Floyd Rose Strat to the "Vintage Hotrod" series of guitars. Probably with a four-bolt neck and at least one Humbucker, if not two. I'm not quite sure why they don't offer any H-S-H guitars, but I guess that's more of an Ibanez thing.

The nut is a bit lumpy but works well, and the adjustable string height at the saddles gives it a natural advantage over so many Floyd units. The vast advantage of not needing to touch the timber easily justifies the price.

You could get some locking Machine Heads, that's what I did. It depends if you want to be able to pull up and do heavy abuse as well.

Thanks for the great ideas! I hadn't heard of the SuperVee before. The bridge is really nice, but the site says the nut won't fit a neck with the "bullet" truss rod adjustment screw, so I wouldn't be able to us that. However, locking tuners may make up for that . . .

If you decide to go that way, a graphite nut will make a huge difference as far as tuning stability. With a guitar as valuable as yours I would leave it up to a pro to install though.

Fender made an overseas model in the 90's called Classic Floyd Rose. It looks like this:

It cost less than the Richie Sambora model cause it had standard sc and no famous siganture on the heeadstock. The stock bridge humbucker is a Dimarzio Paf pro.
