Hey there, I am a lapsed guitarist getting back into it after about 20 years off. My 9 y/o son is also very keen to start playing so I'm looking at getting a decent Strat for me and a cheaper one for him.

There are quite a few, new and used for sale on gumtree here is AUS but the more I look, the more I get concerned that some of them might be fakes, some of them might be over-priced for what they are and others might be total bargains that I should snap up right now! I'm trying not to get over-excited however and do the wrong thing.

I'm a David Gilmour nut (another one....) and I'm wanting to set myself up with a Strat that can help me to pretend that I am David Gilmour, just for a few brief moments.

I wondered if anyone would be so kind as to look at a few of the Strat's for sale that I'm considering and offer an opinion on them.

For me...
Strat 1 - love the grey but is it a Fender color? ie is it a fake?
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/eleebana ... 1027694247

Strat 2 - Brand new Japanese Strat
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/pakenham ... 1028111949

There are some Squiers suitable for my son but I can't post more than 2 URLs at a time so maybe that will be a separate post ;)

I'm also tossing up what to do re an amp. I'd like to get a small valve (tube) amp as I want to get a quality sound but then I'll need pedals etc. to start making my way to Gilmour-land.

I have read some interesting stuff about the Line6 Pods and getting the sounds in software. I have a nice amp and Alesis Monitor 1 speakers. I'm looking to play and record at home rather than play live so this approach was very interesting and had advantages.

Anyone have opinions on the amp/DSP topic?

Thanks for your thoughts and assistance in advance. Getting excited!

Cheers

Paul

The grey one appears to be a real Highway One.

Guitar one is a 2006 Hwy1 strat in blizzard pearl finish made in usa. Guitar 2 is a Japanese made Fender and looks genuine.

Hi plefevre,

Strat 1 looks like a legit American Special, or maybe a Highway 1 Strat. The price is a little steep (close to a new one), but considering that it comes with a HS case, not too bad. The ad says negotiable, and if you could get another $100 or more off it would be better. I don't know much about Japanese Strats, but others here do.

Maybe you could provide more info about your amp needs, power level, playing at home, gigging use, type of music that you play, etc.

I have been using a POD XT for some years now and I think that it does a great job of emulating different amp sounds accurately, and the built in effects are very nice. I think that the PODs are about the best effects units available today.

Hey guys, thanks for your responses. I wondered if the 'grey' was actually 'Blizzard Pearl'. Sometimes people's photos make colours seem quite different than they actually are. I have to say this is my favourite colour. As for the price, any Strat made in the USA seems to start at about A$1200 so I thought A$850 sounded a it too cheap actually and made me wonder why the seller wasn't asking the same prices as the other USA Strats for sale.

As for more info on my requirements, here's what I want to do. I have no interest in playing live and if I ever do, I can grab a suitable amp at that time. I want to be able to get a range of great guitar sounds for just playing at home at low volume and also for recording. I don't want to start accumulating masses of pedals and extra equipment either as I have very little space. These are the reasons that the Line6 Pod approach is of interest to me. Ideally, I would buy a guitar, a DSP and maybe a good small amp so the guitar wasn't locked to the recording setup the whole time and that would be it.

If the Pod is the way to go for me, I had a look at LIne6's website and have to admit I got a bit confused. I couldn't figure out exactly which of their many products I'd need. People talk about the Pod HD500 but is that all you need between your guitar and your recording device? In my case, my iMac.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Cheers

Paul

Yes you can plug a pod hd straight into a mac via the USB and use your mac.

I would spend less and go for a quality USB interface (I use a focusrite 212) and then either use the effects in GarageBand or download apple main stage from the App Store, which will give you pretty much every pedal and amp you could need.

This is the way I practice most of the time and you can get a pretty good Dave gilmour sound if you know what pedals and amps to use.

Total cost in the uk for the 212 and main stage is £140

As an Aussie myself, I can tell you that price is about right for an 'as new' Highway 1 Strat - I paid $1300 for mine (brand new, from my local guitar shop) and it's a 2006 model as well. About nine hundred dollars is the normal street price these days, in my experience.

Edited to add - I just saw that there are some marks on the finish, but if I were you I'd still go for it. They're solid, dependable guitars and are ideal for the purpose you described.

Hey Paul and welcome.

Your comments struck a chord with me, pun intended.

Four years ago a friend insisted I accept a couple of Electric guitars.

I had played acoustic for Forty Years and hadn't any interest in the Electric side, but hey, always open to new ideas and all that. :P

Long story, short version, I've purchased, sold, restored and built literally dozens of guitars.

Currently, I own 9 Amps from 2 Watt up to 80W and at one time or another have owned as many as 18 pedals. There is no way to count the number of peripherals: speakers, cords, picks, batteries, screws, spare necks, etc. I still own.

In many cases I'd buy something inexpensive and move up soon afterwards or fall in love with the reviews of a product and buy before I tried it. :|

That's a cautionary tale of the slippery slo pe of GAS (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome). No one ever bothered to give me a talking to about this, just nodded their heads and smiled! :)

That's my story, make of it what you will.

Thanks guys for your thoughts and advice. The US strat is a 'sky blue' (colour #51) the owner tells me. I'll see how things pan out (pun intended).

Cheers Paul

Thanks for the tip re the Focusrite 2i2 and Apple software Sordid Sentinel, that sounds like an easy way to step into the sound modelling world. Prices here in AUS for the 2i2 are A$179 and for the 2i4, A$219.

I noticed in one of the Focusrite videos I watched, they plugged the output jacks of the 2i2 directly to the monitors. My monitors are hooked up to a NAD 310 stereo amp and the iMac's sound output goes into the NAD. So I was expecting to just have the output from the 2i2 go through the USB to the iMac, through the NAD and out the speakers. Is this correct?

Also, I have an old Kurzweil K2000 synth that I've been meaning to drag out when I got my mojo back and have that as part of my ensemble. I've never played with midi and I'm sadly very ignorant of this side of music making and so I'm not sure if I'd need the midi in/out feature of the 2i4 and/or its 4 outputs. I'm always happy to learn new things though ;)

Cheers

Paul

Hi Donny, by "fakes" you mean "Not made in the USA"?

Yes to me the Japan and Mexicans are just authorized copies.
Buy a real American Stratocaster they are the best and the original.
