Hi

I bought a USA fender strat standard a while back and I have not put the spring in the tremelo arm chamber as it seemed like the tremelo arm wouldn`t go in, I was afraid of pushing down too hard, is this common do I just need to be bold and press harder ?

I have been using the trem without the spring but recently its started drooping

any advice appreciated

Regards

Bob

Tremolo arm with a spring is a " screw on" arm .

" Push in" arm don't need a spring . Yes it is hard to push / clip in. There is a Allen screw to adjut it on the tremolo block, back on the body by removing the back plate.

thanks for the reply

The hole where the arm goes had a spring inside and a round piece of sticky paper holding it in, if I take the spring out the arm clicks in nicely but if I put the spring in the hole the arm will not click in, is this the type you are thinking of ? The guitar came like this new

Hi Bob,

It's easier to see than explain so I photographed each kind of Tremolo Arm (Whammy Bar).

On top/right is a push in type, the bottom is a screw in.

Stratele52 is right, no spring needed with the push in type, but you may need to push firmly.

Whichever type you have, make sure nothing else (extra spring, gummy bear, etc.) is in there first. :)

An American Standard Strat comes with a screw in trem arm. If a pop in arm was received, it is incorrect.

Throw the little spring away - it's more likely to foul the thread on the tremolo arm.

Bad advice! The spring never touches the arm threads.

You might as well throw it away regardless.
The spring will fall out when you unscrew the arm anyway

Personal preference...

The spring is not necessary, though I do use it on my Strat.

It's purpose is to keep the Whammy Bar from drooping - some players like it right at hand, others prefer it out of the way.

The spring tension keeps it where you left it (sort of), whereas without it, Gravity does it's thing.

Personally, when I'm done using it, instead of just letting it go, I move it downward a bit so it doesn't interfere.

It's gonna get lost in short order and then I won't replace it.

cheers!

This is confusing.

I have the exception to that rule. A few years back, I discovered that my new American Standard had a pop in trem block. I've told that story here before. It came with a screw in arm, which I swapped out at my local Fender dealer.

Well, I guess if Fender can provide the wrong arm for the correct trem block they can certainly provide the wrong trem block for the correct arm.

I was quite surprised, wondering why the heck I couldn't screw the arm in. I thought the threads were missing!

So my Standard was part Deluxe.

Lightnin describes the screw-in arm and spring well - at least in my vintage '65 - without the spring the arm just flops around, with the spring it stays where you leave it. The spring provides friction by pushing up on the base of the arm.

But as some have implied it can either get lost or they get stuck inside (you can buy them in replacement packs of 6 or so). My arm broke off in the block back in the 70's, I got a machinist to remove it but the threads were never right since then.

Currently a spring is stuck in the bottom, I can get the arm back in but the 'sweet spot' between having it flop around and being all the way in is very small. I'm still trying to get the spring out without doing more damage to the threads.
