This came up on ebay recently and it's pretty unusual. Seems like I've seen one somewhere but my memory fails me, yet again. :)

Anyway, the auction is by a gentleman in Spain, he claims the neck is from a MIJ model ST68-HO CH, Nitro refinished, Tuners changed to "F" model and the logo has been replaced.

I'm not a prospective buyer, just curious. Who knows what this is? :?:

Fender-Japan produced some custom "zebra-finish" rosewood-bodied Strats awhile back that used the neck shown in that listing. Thus, the neck is likely just as the seller has described. In practical terms, it's a '66 re-issue Jazzmaster neck with a CBS-era Stratocaster headstock decal.

Ahhh, Jazzmaster, Thanks Arjay.

I'm pretty new to electric guitar for an old guy, but I have devoted a lot of time to the care and feeding of suchlike, especially Strats, over the last 4 1/2 years. :)

After getting your answer I started studying images and reviews of the Jazzmaster & it's players and came upon this great article from Lollar Pickups, "Jazzmaster Pickups & the Fender Jazzmaster Guitar".

http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=jazzmaster-pickups-guitars

I like the idea of a slower tremolo and fatter pickups.

Of course now I'm GASsing for a Jazzmaster of my own.

Ha, I think you're right, and sometimes I wonder about the friend who so carelessly got me involved in it!

In around 1967 Fender was going to change the neck on the Strat to that type of neck, binding and block inlays.

It seems they didn't because the Strat demand had dropped to the point where they were going to discontinue it. I'll have to consult the history books to double check all that business.

Good stuff, it's a great looking neck, but I'm not doing any builds for a while.

Tony Bacon's wonderful history, "The Stratocaster Guitar Book" delves into the CBS purchase and Rock & Roll/Pop Musician's admiration for the Strat at that time pretty well. He doesn't think there was a problem with demand for the Strat. Maybe some other models, though.

This is an excerpt: "...1968 pricelist were 9 basic solidbody electrics in addition to the Strat: the Bronco, Duo-Sonic, Electric XII, Esquire, Jaguar, Jazzmaster, Musicmaster, Mustang, and Telecaster. By now a Sunburst Strat with vibrato listed at $314.50 ($50 less for the hardtail) and with Blond or Custom Color finish the price went up to $330....".

Oh Man, give me TWO of EACH!

There aren't many 1967 Strats out there.

I'm pretty sure that Fender came close to pulling the plug.

I don't know either way, I was pretty busy that year trying to graduate high school without much interest in the curriculum! :)

Oh, and thought I was the next Rock Singing Sensation To Be...

I would like to know what happened to the Jazzmaster line.

I see them available on ebay from $300 for a Squier to $11,000 or so for a vintage.

I'd like to find an affordable one with a playable neck and toss in some-a-those Lollar Pups.

What was that I was saying about not doing any builds for a while!?! :P

What I meant was..historically, had the line been suspended and resurrected or marginally available over the years, I suspect the latter is the case.

I did spend a lot of time on the Fender Jazzmaster site you referred me to. :)

I decided I want the American Vintage in Black (not available) with the neck from a Select that has block inlays. I'll just mod it to my own preference from there! :D

Same Old Story, Different Day, Champagne Taste and Tap Water to Pay. :(

Back in 2011, at Frankfurt Musikmesse, there was that baby being displayed on the Custom Shop booth; the neck seems very, very similar.

Image

That used to be a 68 Strat Hollow Body masterbuilt by Greg Fessler.

The guitar in question lacks off an f-hole to be considered as a hollowbody.

In your place I would call it a double bound 68 Slab Body Strat.

The butterscotch double neck Telecaster pictured right is an astonishing eye catcher!

That's a great looking guitar yvil, thanks. I personally love the Block Inlay work on the neck. I guess it's not popular with Fender because it's reminiscent of a Gibson look, but I think it would be pretty easy to assimilate into the brand, I wish Fender would.

BTW, if "That used to be a 68 Strat Hollow Body masterbuilt by Greg Fessler", what is it now!!

Be my guest !

They were actually two double-necks.
