Just bought what was advertised as a 2000 american standard stratocaster. Using the guide for spotting a fake everything seemed reasonable. Then I sent of for information on the S/N. It is for a 2000 American Cherry Red Double Fat Strat.. Problem is I am holding a Wine Standard Strat. The buyer has agreed to take it back if I want since the neck doesn't match the body. My question is how can I determine if the body is from an American Strat or what? And the year it was made? Also is it common to see this?

Here is one picture: http://imgur.com/S3Nn2MK

Will upload more tomorrow with close ups.

Take it apart. See dates/names/signatures on neck end; neck pocket, pickup routing/design; dates on pots; design of bridge saddles and bridge block...and on, and on, and on....

More pics.

Are you afraid you were sold a Mexican body?

So I actually feel better this morning. After looking at the guitar more, I believe it actually is Candy Apple Red, you all can verify. Here are all the pictures. Everything looks good to me except it isn't a double fat strat, but if I understand correctly that shouldn't be a difficult change for someone to make. Let me know if you think this is all correct and if the pics look legit.

Everything looks legit in terms of the body and the neck in terms of stickers, stamps, hardware, routing, etc., and it does look like the circa 2000/2001 candy apple red on my monitor.

It pretty much has to be a modded American Double Fat Strat - and it also looks like the pickguard is from an American Series Strat of that same era so it would have been a pickguard swap. It also looks like a previous owner added some foil shielding to the body cavities - probably when they swapped the pickguard. Who knows, maybe they also had a regular SSS American Series Strat from about the same year and for whatever reason they decided they wanted the candy apple red to be SSS and the other one to be the HH one.

That's the only deduction that makes any sense. It would be easy enough to restore the "Double Fatness" using available factory parts but frankly, why bother? Those humbuckers sounded pretty lame in comparison to most other double-coils, at least to my ears.
