For those of you who own a Fender Highway 1 Stratocaster and have Hot Alnico 3
pickups here is the answer this will change it to a Hot Alnico 5 pickup.
Alnico 5 Magnet Rods .187 x 671

To get polarity correct just hold each rod up to the rod your replacing if it pushes away
its wrong turn it around and it will stick to it thats the right polarity direction to insert the rod.
Leaving pickups in pickguard use a small tool to gently push old rod towards the guitar.
insert new one as you do. Your strings and pickguard screws will need to be off to retrieve the old rods.
Also remove that nasty grease bucket tone circuit and wire it back standard tone.
Wiring diagrams can be found on http://www.fender.com

This is a Highway 1 diagram, change it to a standard bottom diagram,

MUCH BETTER!

The Humbucker on it is an Atomic and with standard tone wiring sounds great like a 498t Gibson
These mods will make that strat sound like the best standard Strat you ever heard.

Remind me, what is the difference between the 3s and the 5s?

3 is dull and lifeless 5 is what they use in about every other Fender Single Coil.
Probably a reason its the standard, just saying.

I swapped out the pups on mine for custom shop '69 ones - it instantly sounded like a new guitar.

Yep - the greasebucket seems to work well with the CS69's, somehow. I also copper shielded it, and star-earthed it (I clamped the trem down with an extra spring, since I never use the whammy bar). I also got it set up for 10-46 strings.

Well, it sounds how I wanted it to, and it stays in tune really well (I also put Schaller locking tuners on it). It's like a de-facto hardtail, essentially. :D
