I'm not a fan of fake road worn guitars. Seems dishonest and trying to be something you're not. People pay good money for new road worn guitars, but would never pay a premium for a new road worn car, strange.

So many of these 'relics', commanding quite a bit of coin, look like nothing more than damaged goods. There's obviously quite a market out there in the minds of some of the online houses, like Wildwood, considering the inventory they are offering. Pre-owned automobiles, particularly those in the luxury market, are considered 'gently used' as opposed to abused. I expect that this what we can expect in the current Road Worn editions.

Yeah, but couldn't you say that about all of the vintage reissue models, trying to be something that they are not?

When I gigged my HSS Highway One, an audience member I talked with thought it was a real hot rodded seventies Strat.

IMHO no., A road worn is trying to say (unsuccessfully) look at me I've spent years on the road and paid my dues. The Hwy 1 was never trying to be something it's not. If others like the look good for them , it's just not for me.

Back in the day great effort was expended to keep gear looking pristine. For example: we used to adjust our belts to the side, or place a wash cloth over the buckle to avoid buckle rash. At one time, a maker actually designed a shield which fit over the back of a Stratocaster to protect it. Moving forward, the guitars of artists of note began to acquire a 'battle worn' patina which audiences saw as a kind of panache: e.g. Clapton's Brownie, Blackie, Rory Gallagher's, SRV's #1, and the relic craze was born. A vintage reissue is new guitar which speaks to new guitars of the past. A relic'd new guitar speaks to a battle it never fought. It's not a question of honesty here, but rather a matter of preference in terms of feel, tone, and appeal. Either way, both the consumer and the manufacturer win. In the end, that's what it's really all about, isn't it??

I can't say enough nice about my 50's road Worn Strat. It's a black one with a very worn neck and the aged pick guard. But it feels like an old brown show. I got it used for 500 clams at GC and it came with a basically new Fender G&G black tolex case. I have a custom shop '56 relic, a 50th anniversary Master Built '54 Closet Classic and another '56 Closet Classic each of which cost me more than 2K. I play the Road Worn more than any of the others. Here's what it looks and sounds like:
