Hi guys,

I'm kind of new on the forum, and can't wait to get started!

I ordered a Fender Road Worn '50s Stratocaster through my local guitar store a month ago, but Fender told us that they didn't have anyone left - so I had to wait until september, where they have produced a new batch...

To be honest, I think that these guitars have a lot of good qualities, but a lot of cosmetic problems...
I didn't like the neck which where completely sanded down and was all rough, and the fretboard was also sanded do a lot in various places. It didn't look natural or realistic at all...
The signs of wear on the body looked a bit overdone as well, but was alright.

BUT, yesterday my new Road Worn arrieved in the store. It was like a totally other guitar?! It is so beautiful and perfect!!
I have seen about 5 different guitars of this exact same model, but they all looked the same (like my description above) - but my new guitar is completely different!!
It is as if they have listened to the cosmetic-related complaints from customers in different forums like this, and improved this new batch of guitars a lot.

The neck and the fretboard have no particular signs of wear, but the finish is not shiny anymore - so it actually looks and feels like a pair of hands has been playing it for 50+ years...
And the signs of wear on the body looks so much more realistic now. They have returned to the "less-is-more" concept, and only made a few dings and paint scratches. It looks very realistic and great now!
It was very easy to determine that the old batch was fake and relic'ed, but this new guitar looks exactly like a vintage instrument from the 50's!!

Can anyone tell me, if there has been made some changes in the factories?? I haven't heard anything about it, but these guitars look, sound and feel so much better now.
I LOVE this guitar and it is all I ever wished for, so I'm very ecstatic right now!!

Kind regards.

G'day Frederik, congratulations. I'd sure like to see some pictures to illustrate the differences between the old and the new.
I am fascinated by the effects of time and use on a guitar (both real and replicated)
Welcome to the forum. Not everyone here likes relic guitars, as you'll probably discover.

Goodonya ...Mark.

I've seen a couple of pictures comparing the older Road Worn vs the newer Road Worn series and from what I've seen the newer series appears more natural. I don't recall the links for those pics, but from what I recall the newer ones didn't have such extreme cosmetics. The white pickguard was less yellow and the worn section where the arm meets the top of the guitar wasn't as pointed as the earlier model. I played one of the earlier strats at a local guitar shop and really liked it, but it didn't looked like a natural relic. I am really waiting to see this newer series in person.

I looked at some retailers, but they don't have any fresh pictures of the Road Worn.

So please take and post some! Thanks.

I played both, the '60s and '50s, and like both of them. Of the two, I preferred the '50s. It felt and looked like a well-worn and broken in Strat. Worth every penny.

Haven't seen one in my local GC for ages now. Methinks I'm gonna have to give Sam Ash a look see.

Hi guys! I'm sorry about the slow reply...

I have just uploaded 8 pictures of my new Fender Road Worn '50s Stratocaster on flickr. Please tell me, what you guys think (when entering the link just skip between the pictures):

Definitely a lot 'cleaner' looking than prior editions.

The neck wear doesn't look as over the top.

Ditto! I recall seeing earlier editions on which the finish was well worn, particularly on the back of the neck.

In case you want to add some dings of your own, here are some examples.

I'm not a fan of fake road worn guitars. Seems dishonest and trying to be something you're not. People pay good money for new road worn guitars, but would never pay a premium for a new road worn car, strange.

I always thought that the earlier editions would be improved by rubbing some dirt into the necks.

Personally, I love the look and the feel of the Road Worn Series. The previous models have been overdone a lot for some years now...
They have sanded the back of the neck completely down, and large areas of the fretboard was sanded down too. A genuine used and worn guitar would never look like that!
My new Road Worn guitar is not sanded anywhere! But the back of the neck is not at all sticky and feels a lot smoother than the headstock, meaning that it actually feels genuinely worn like as if sweating hands have been playing it for lots of years. And the fretboard also feels worn in a realistic way. As mentioned earlier, nothing is sand on the neck and it feels and looks so much better than the older models.

But the main reason why I- and a lot of other people buy the Road Worn guitars is that they are already broken in. I have owned 17 different guitars with poly finish, and this strat is the first guitar I've ever owned with a nitro finish. It sounds and feels so much better than the other strats I've owned.
I have owned the Eric Clapton "Blackie", John Mayer Signature, Deluxe, American Vintage, American Standard, etc...

But this broken in Road Worn strat feels so much better than all of them, and the soft v-neck i just to die for!! I love it in every single way, and I have dreamed about owning a genuine Stratocaster from the 50's...
This is the closest I will ever come to obtaining that particular sound and feel. The Tex-Mex pickups sounds amazing too!! Perfect for Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Hendrix, etc...
