..can someone recommend to me a Strat with a Floyd Rose? I enjoy playing 80's hair metal and am looking for something that fits the genre.

I am not positive I have the one your looking for, but it might be close. I have a 87 MIJ Strat equipped with the Kahler Spyder tremolo and neck lock. The Kahler Spyder was licensed by Floyd Rose for a time to make these bad boy's.

Is this what you mean? I am no expert, not even close. I play mostly classic rock, but I bet it would be great for metal. Your going to need a Marshall stack. I have posted my guitar pics too many times I feel like, because I'm proud of it . Metal needs power to play. Here I go again showing off my pride and joy! :lol:

I have a Floyd Rose Strat and to be honest, I'm tired of it. If you want a guitar for the music you are playing, I'd suggest you look at a Charvel San Dimas, preferably a Japanese one. If you buy a Strat, the first thing you will do is take out the humbucker as it is largely useless for the style you are after.

The mim Blacktops come equipped with a cheaper Floyd Rose Special made from die cast nickel alloy, which have been known for broken saddles if the saddle screws have been over tightened. Also, the hex bridge screws have also been known to snap after prolonged heavy use over time.

MiM standard Floyd Rose despite what fender says in the spec sheet- is not an Original Floyd Rose. It's made by Ping, but is still reasonably good anyway, made from steel rather than the nickel alloy. Note the difference in screws and the saddles that have no beveled edge on them.

But far from the type of guitar you would play 80's metal on.

My Strat is basically a Strat with a humbucker and Floyd rose. No slim 'fast' neck or big frets. It sits in its case now that I have a 90's fender Heartfield Talon, which is far superior.

Just opinion.

Yes indeed, but still Korean made Ping Floyd Rose.

The most obvious way to tell, is that 'Licensed Under Floyd Rose Patents' on the upper thumb screw plate:

Let me go further. Another difference is the logo will be stamped on the actual Floyd Rose, where you will see the actual logo- on the non-American or German models you will sometimes see a transfer type logo.

Another difference is the block is steel on actual originals where the ping models are shorter and made of brass.

There are other minor differences, such as bridge plate thickness, knife-edge pivot point depth, however there is a big difference between a Ping OFR, korean OEM Floyd Rose or FRT-1000 and an actual German made Schaller or an American Floyd Rose. That is the price.

On top of that, you have the Floyd Rose Special, Floyd Rose II, Floyd Rose III all of which are not as good quality as: Floyd Rose Original, (licensed by) Schaller Floyd Rose and of course the Floyd Rose Pro. Not to mention the Floyd Rose Speedloader and the Floyd Rose Ti
(Titanium)

So yes, it is a Floyd Rose Original- just a cheaper version of the actual thing. Think along the lines of a Lamborghini made in Korea, to keep costs down, you will also sacrifice quality and performance.

When I bought my MIJ Strat in 87 it came with the Kahler spyder bridge and neck lock. It was supposed to be licensed by Floyd Rose to make. But I had no idea that original Floyd Rose stuff was available. The quality looks a lot better than mine, though mine works and plays just fine.

I guess Kahler went by the way side. Thank you for the info.

I would think the Fender Blacktop Floyd Rose Stratocaster is a good enough guitar

Donnie, you missed some essential equipment for the genre......1 case of hair spray (1 month's supply), lots of spandex pants in neon colors, dyed or bleaching hair care products, Maybelline facial products, take some cool guitar lessions with CC DeVille, and rent some hot chicks with your simililar gravity defying 80's hairdo and looks for your video's. FYI, that Fender Guitar needs to be Mean Greenie in color, with a mixture of neon pink, purple, and yellow pickup covers and bobbins.

Yeah I think they still make those in Ibanez and Krammer.
I didn't know the guys budget so I suggest what I couldn't be paid to buy.
I learned my lesson on those Mexican Strats all it took was buying a couple.
Paint chips like glass frets wear super fast and after the pickup and hardware upgrades,
I could have bought a used American Stratocaster and got the real thing.

I have one of these and the finish is beautiful, but as Blertles says you need to swap out the humbucker for something less "muddy". A great guitar for the money though. I turned mine into a bit of a Sambora tribute. :)

I have to say Blertles, the bridge on mine does not have the "licensed..." text on the screw plate and the "Floyd Rose" text is engraved and definitely not a transfer, though it isn't stamped. The block isn't brass either. Curious.

Can't go wrong with a HM;

Or a Kahler equipped Prodigy;

Do those MIM Strats with Floyds have a fully recessed cavity? I have a Squire MIM Strat with a Floyd II and the cavity is partially recessed.

All the best,
Robin

Not a bad call Robinstrat.
Charvel and Hair band belong to each other.
To bad they dont make an American Special Floyd Rose model.
That would be perfect.

Certainly. Hope this is good enough, be interested to hear your thoughts on what it is.
