Relicing - or "ruining" as it should be called - is the most idiotic trend in guitar finishing ever.

It's pretending to be something you're not.

It's pretending your Squier Affinity is a '54 Stratocaster.

It's pretending that your "road worn" guitar has been out of your bedroom.

It's pretending that you've played a gig.

My guitars are road worn from being taken on the road, not from some snot-nosed idiot with a blow torch and a pack of sandpaper making them look like offcuts.

Well your certainly have a way of stating the facts Frank but you nailed it.

I personally cringe every time I got 15 min to set up for a showcase gig and I bang a new Les Paul or Strat into a cymbal stand or a bass drum.
One band coming off one band coming on and small stages, the bigger gigs aren't so tight.
Already my newest Les Paul the Trans Ebony 2013 has dings.

I hear you, I hate being pressured into making a mistake and dinging my guitars. It bothers me endlessly when I have a ding or scratch on my gear. Years of use on old stuff I get used to but new gear is tougher to stomache

Haha, I make no apology for straight talking!

This raises another point, guitars that are so highly finished that you daren't take them on the road for fear of scratching them. I don't see the point of a guitar that needs to be kept in a bank vault. Paul Reed Smith are you listening? No, of course you're not.

Yep I went to buy the $4000 Gibson Les Paul Custom my Custom Classic now looks like.
I looked at both and at least mine still had real wood on the Fretboard.
I was not paying $4000 for a fake ebony board.
So I bought the custom classic for $1899 took it home dropped in a 498t popped off the covers.
Stained the baked maple board with leather dye and bang! Same guitar.
The money I saved I went back and got the other one same price.
Ask me it was a 2 for 1 sale :)
Now Im done with Gibson I got my 08 and 09 American Fenders and Im loving The American Specials.
Back on track though I like my gear to stay at least pretty nice looking.
Im a machinist and make good pay
I got offered a recording contract again but when they talk cash they seem to not be able to afford me I make to much money lol.
Rock stars on an average don't make much.

I hate it when the trash man dents my trash can. Unacceptable for my musical instruments to look abused.

I'm glad you make a lot of money. You should mention that on more guitar forums.

This relic fad has to end.

An extension of the fad is where someone takes a nicely naturally worn guitar and then takes a hatchet to it...

This topic is huge on another forum and I admit to being too old to understand. Do the people that for some reason destroy a perfectly good guitar pay big money for those jeans that have huge holes in them and look worse than the nastiest pair of jeans I threw out?

Because it looks to be the same mentality. No one will be able to make me think my beautiful 87 MIJ would look just great after I drug it through a scrap metal yard. Nor would I build a new house and dump some old tires in the yard and brake out the windows and start it on fire in places so I could put it out and make it look "lived in".

What the hell is the world coming to?

Man your guitars are fine as frogs hair! And I would love to be able to say I have actually played a showcase gig with bands coming off and on, 15 minutes to set up.

It hit me how far off I am from that, and if I will ever be there. I bet you take it like its no big deal and feel your not there yet either only at a much higher level than me.

It does suck when you have to choose - FOR LOVE or FOR MONEY.
Where I live we have the same scenario. The music industry does not yield enough money for me to justify giving up my day job. :(

Pretty much agree with the concensus here...

Personally, I never wanted to be a Wannabe badly enough to destroy my guitars.

I take very good care of them, wiping them down w/ a microfibre cloth each time they go back in the case, checking neck relief once a month (or after a severe weather change), cleaning/oiling (lightly) at every string change, etc.

I wanna keep them looking brand new for as long as possible... all the while understanding that they will eventually wear the scars of having been played to Death !

But those will be scars of Honor rather than scars of Shame ! 8)

cheers!

Interesting that the article mentions an artiste who has stripped the top finish off a Takamine acoustic guitar. It's possible that was done for practical reasons i.e. to allow the top to vibrate more. That trick's been around for years, John Lennon stripped the top finish off his Epiphone Casino and claimed it changed the sound of the instrument.

However, I suspect that in a very short time that acoustic will succumb to warping. The poly finish doesn't just keep a guitar looking pretty, it's there mainly to stop moisture creeping into the wood.

I agree with what you're saying so far as improving tone.

Call me cynical, but this chick ain't John Lennon and my suspicion leans more toward this 'Country Bunny' trying to visually boost her creds, not her sound.

It's probably not even the instrument used for the recording.

cheers!
