1-the Standard versus Deluxe

2- the American Deluxe Stratocaster vs American Deluxe Stratocaster® HSS.

3- Which known artist play an American Deluxe Stratocaster HSS ?

Print out the specs and read them side by side. These are two very different instruments at this time in marketing. They differ in neck options, bridge and saddle designs, pickup types and combinations, as well as electronic circuits.

Forget the artists!! We've been through that here, over and over.

There's so much that goes into "Tone" these days that the guitar is only part of the mix. For some insight into that see the last issue of Guitar Player. Great article on the 'search for tone'.

Consider what you enjoy playing, what the rest of your rig consists of, and go into a dealer and audition the guitars.

In addition to your initial inquiries, considering your heroes, look at the Jeff Beck Signature Strat, or swapping an EMG DG-20 into an American Standard.

Then, ORDER the guitar........ "Out of the carton, not off the wall.''

'That ain't work'in, that's the way you do it"

Any more questions....we're here.

That's interesting. From what I've heard you should have played the same guitar as you are going to buy. Not order one becuse the tone can be different between 2 of the same types of guitars.

Ever spent a Saturday afternoon in a busy guitar store watching and listening to the headbanger's ball as you hearing goes into extinction!?!?!?!
After two hours of beating up 'your' future guitar, the 'wannabees' put 'em back on the hangar and walk out thinking everyone's been quite impressed.

Not!!

While I consider anything on the wall as 'used,' if you feel strongly about your opinion take a good look at the instrument, particularly the finish and the pickguard. If it appears well played to you, and you love the instrument, see if you can get an percentage off the asking price due to condition.

You know, when you order a Custom Shop instrument, built to your spec, you pays your money up front, and what you get many month's later is yours to take home. I haven't heard many complaints in these pages about that approach to buying a guitar. They will make good on an error on their part, but if you're not happy with the guitar, so be it.

Good luck.

Years ago I had a shop owner tune up maybe a dozen 12 strings to test them out for me. When I arreived to pick up my guitar he said, "Here. I think you 'll find this one quite sweet." And it was - and continues to be! There's got to be something said for that.

I think you'd be fine with a standard or a deluxe. Tonewise they're very similar unless you get an ash deluxe. The biggest different is appointments and hardware. the deluxe uses the SCN pups and while most like them, some don't. that would have to be up to you.

I love playing Gilmour. I had a deluxe and had no problem getting his tone. Was able to do it fairly well with a MIM standard too. Now I have an EJ and have no problem getting his tone. In the end they're all still strats.

Mmmmmmm.......on reviewing the products section under American Deluxe, Deluxe and Standard there are 10 guitar choices. Add the new American Standard brings us to 14 given differences in neck, fretboards, and electronics. Additionally, you are moving from Made in America, to Made in Mexico, product. There, another significant variable.

A greengrocer offers 14 varieties of apples and you want a panel of more than 150K apple afficionados to help you make a choice.

Realize that there are people out there like England's Ed Mardell, for example, who are buying brand new '08 American Standards (hardly on the market 3 mos.) and already swapping out the necks, the pickups and who knows what else.

It is unfortunate that you have to order your apples without sampling. As I suggested before...take stock of your music preferences, read the specs, close your eyes and point. If you have access to more than one musical instrument dealer, visit as many as you can and play as many as you can of what is in stock, before deciding.

If your first choice doesn't please you, save your pennies and trade up. If you look around these pages, most of us, at one time or another, have not had just one Strat in the stable. However, you must start out with at least one.

Good luck and keep us posted.

i personaly go with a late 2006 upgrade or 2007 highway one strat
these strats do it all from hendrix/trower/jeff beck/david gilmour tones
to todays modern tones it also a much better than the american standard or the american deluxe.
