Left-handers are ten percent of the population, but only five percent of guitarists play left-handed. That's because half the left-handers play right-handed - like Duane Allman, Mark Knopfler, Danny Gatton, Billy Corgan, Michael Bloomfield, Gary Moore, Noel Gallagher... and me. :)

Still, if only five percent of the Strats Fender sell are left-handed, that's still a heck of a lot of guitars. More than all their sales of Mustangs or Jazzmasters or Jaguars, I bet. If it's worth catering to those who want to buy niche models such as Jagmasters you'd have thought it's well worth catering a bit better to left-handers.

The odd thing is that smaller companies seem to have no difficulty looking after left-handers, and these days it's become far less common to see them charging a premium for doing so. If little companies can offer all their models and finishes left-handed why can't a volume manufacturer like Fender?

This subject comes up regularly. It often feels like Fender are missing a trick on this one.

Then again:

Very much so. Fender bring out bling aplenty year after year, that doesn't sell, and throw lots of marketing $$ at it, but miss the one constant market that is screaming - "MAKE SOMETHING FOR US YOU USELESS BASTARDS, WE'RE RIGHT HERE - ALWAYS HAVE BEEN!"

So busy plugging teeny tiny niches, they completely ignore the main one. Idiots.

yeah being a lefty is not without its hassles when getting and trying out guitars. Problem is I do not get to "test" many guitars first an many of my guitar purchases have been over the internet as a result. I would prefer more choice but that's one of the small penalties to pay being superior to the general population I guess....

Another part of the market is the right handers that want to buy lefty guitars.

You can thank J.M. Hendrix for that.

Another, huge bit of the market is all the left- and right-handers who simply want to play Strats in general, for which we can also thank Mr Hendrix, probably ahead of any other player. :D

Man, the endorsement deal that gentleman would have going for him if he was around today...

I loves me Fenders but if you want something unique call Carvin. Absolute top notch quality, you choose woods, colors etc. but only their p/ups. I have a Carvin LP clone (the CS model) and it's typically the only instrument I play. Pure heaven. Their Strat clone is the Bolt, you can get a really nice one for a grand or less.
