You can't play heavy rock and metal without a Marshall stack.

The type of guitar is irrelevant.

+1

Unless you put a scorching humbucker in the bridge.

If you want that Marshall crunch but still retain that familiar Fender vibe, get a Machete 50 head!

I never saw one of those, I like it very much.

Have you ever heard of Jimi Hendrix, Richie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen???
Really.
Yes, you can rock on single coils. That's what they are made for.

Those Machete amps have gotten good reviews.

This was the first I'd seen them too.

Playing heavy rock/metal on single coils seems to work just fine for Paul Gilbert. If you haven't had a chance to check out Fuzz Universe, you should

Matthias Jabs used his white, 1974 all stock Fender Stratocaster for his first album with the Scorpions ´Love Drive´. I can´t say it doesn´t sound metal (well, we called it Hardrock back in the days). Yes, he used his favourite Marshall Superlead from ´79 he still uses these days (yes, it was brand new when he recorded his tracks).
Killer tone.

All the best,
Robin

Fender did a shortlived Matthias Jabs signature Strat in the late 1990's.

This guitar sported an HSS configuration hooked into a TBX circuit and a 22-fret rosewood fretboard with Saturn inlays.

Matthias is more synonymous with the Gibson Explorer.

Like most things, it's about having the right tool for the job. So, you can (and I know people who do) play heavy metal & hard rock on ukuleles!. Playing same on a single coil Strat is 100% doable.

BUT

If you mostly want to play that type of music, a standard single coil Strat is NOT the right tool for the job. You're looking for something with at least one high output humbucker, and preferably a nic Floyd Rose tremolo too. Ibanez and ESP have the best selection of pure metal machines, but Fender offers lots of guitars that will do a darn fine job of it for you too.

Here is a versatile as heck example available at Musician's Friend

I've learn from watching heavy metal players everything from Teles, Strats and LP to just about anything, that you can play heavy metal with any quality electric guitar. If you use single coil pups, will you sound just like your heros? No, but no pup can do that. It's all in the player.

I've noticed quite a few Heavy Metal, jazz, rock, punk, funk, and pop players favoring the Tele these days.

FYI. Shimmi was just kidding when he said he was just kidding. Strats really do burst into flames when they are used to play heavy metal. We maybe can't see it because it happens in the spiritual realm but it does happen. The Strat bursts into flames and Lucifer lifts his face to the stars and slams his three pointed sceptre to the earth while howling an evil twisted laugh and then your soul is committed to Hell.

JK.

(I was just kidding when I typed JK)

Just kidding.
No. Really. The Devil takes your soul.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I do and you can do it on a single coil or a humbucker.

Your sound is your amp and your pedal chain.

Single coils are great sounding cranked up and blazing.

Jimi Hendrix blazed on the guitar for a great example.

Metal to me is like Megadeth, Judas Priest, maybe even Sabbath, etc. If you are talking Metal, not many (any?) of them use a single coil guitar.

donnycraven,

I notice that every one of your guitars shown has a hum-bucker.

Dave Murray uses Strats with single coil-sized humbuckers.

Black Sabbath started out on a strat and sg with p-90s.
But true we all use humbuckers now, but you can do it though.
