I'm new at playing an electric guitar(I play acoustic) and I was wondering if you can play heavy rock and metal on Fender Stratocaster and single coil pickups. I heard you have to have humbuck pickups to play rock and metal on a guitar, is this true?

Hi James2244,

Don't try to play heavy rock with a single-coil equipped guitar, it will burst into flames! JK!

If you are like me, just use guitar and amp, you can get better heavy rock sounds with hum-bucker equipped guitars. But, with enough pedals, or the right pedal, you can get heavy sounds using single coils. Or, get a Strat with single coils and a hum-bucker for more versatility.

Catch FIRE! What do you mean?!?! Just to let you know I just bought recently a Fender Standard Stratocaster if that makes a difference. What other concerns should I know?

JK is short for "just kidding", meaning I was joking about the flames.

+1

I have a Zoom Amp Simulator on my pedalboard and I can get all but the heaviest grunge sounds using a traditional single-coil Strat plugged into any vintage Fender amp.

You can't play heavy rock and metal without a Marshall stack.

The type of guitar is irrelevant.

Unless you put a scorching humbucker in the bridge.

If you want that Marshall crunch but still retain that familiar Fender vibe, get a Machete 50 head!

move to about 2:26 to hear the strat solo, but if you look at the guitar I think he has mini humbuckers in it . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wEADoybjfk

Ask that question to Dave Murray of Iron Maiden! Of course, to be fair, his Strat is equipped with two DiMarzio PAF buckers.

There are of course many hot-rail and layered humbucker pickups available that fit a standard 3 single coil Strat body. SO I daresay you could play any style of music you wish with a Stratocaster!

Ask Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions, 1974-1978), or Yngwie Malmsteen. All hard rock guitarists that play Strats. All 3 of them have that classical-infused rock guitar thing going on. If you haven't listened to any of them, I strongly recommend you do. :)

At first I thought you were kidding about this. Oh yes, you most certainly can play hard rock with a single coil set up in your Stratocaster, but as mentioned, it gets done right with a Marshall stack.
