Hey all,

Just a quick question, I was browsing around the internet when I came across the Fender FSR 72 Reissue Strat. Apparently there are only 144 available in the US and they're Made in Japan. They go for about $700 new, and I'm extremely interested because I love 70's-style Strats, love the big headstock (I know that's not the general consensus, but Hendrix, Trower, Uli Roth, and Blackmore looked very cool with their big-headstock Strats). Given the general praise for MIJ models, I was thinking of going for it, but I was curious if anyone else had any experience with this model and what they thought of it. Thanks!

With only 144 available, it's unlikely you'll find someone else who has one.

Are you looking to get talked in to or talked out of buying it? I can go either way.

Jimi Hendrix never laid a hand on a 3-bolt Strat with micro-tilt neck.

Not in this life anyway.

Unless Fender sent him a prototype in mid-1970 ... They made him that rosewood Strat, right?

Well, Fender has enough models with the large headstock, which must mean there is still a decent market for them.

Well it's only 144 available in North America, I imagine there are others available elsewhere. Someone did post a video on YouTube, but they didn't even play it

I'm more just looking for an honest opinion of them. It appears they have the same specs as your everyday MIJ 72 Reissue Strat, but they seem to be priced pretty well, they're going for the same as what a used one would go for.

That is true, but I rarely see a 68 Reissue around. I've heard that the 3-bolt/micro-tilt thing does work, but the construction just sucked in the 70's.

True, I just hear more about those who think the smaller headstock is better.

Anyway, does anyone have any insight into any of this? I'm seriously GASing for this MIJ 72 Reissue, I just want to know if anyone has any other opinions of it.

Just a bunch of haters.

My opinion is to "go for it." I seriously doubt that you will be disappointed. I would suggest that you not use the micro-tilt to tilt your neck. Just keep the neck firmly in contact with the neck pocket and all should be well. That's what I do with the couple mid-70's Strats I own; never had any trouble with that 3-bolt business.

They are regular line-up product in Japan, they're only FSR as they are let into the US market in limited numbers. http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/st72.html

These after all are a cheaper version of the MIM classic 70's Strat.

Unless you are after a decent '68 reissue with texas specials ( http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/st68-tx.html ), personally I'd rather go for a MIM model as the quality seems to be consistent these days, except you'll get better sounding pickups and an ash body rather than the basswood MIJ model. Basswood is not a bad wood however.

The MIJ mystique is pure mojo and hype here. I'd get excited over a 68 reissue anyday.

Just my opinion.

Oh I could certainly get behind that! Problem is I can't find one in the same sort of price range as this Limited 72 Reissue. I did see some new on eBay, but at that point, I might as well get a used American Vintage 70's reissue, though I will admit the '68 is certainly cooler. Do you know anywhere I might be able to find a used one? The used section of Ishibashi had some great prices, but apparently they don't ship to the US anymore. If I could find one of those for around $700-$800, I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat.

The other idea I had was to go for an American Special, which has similar specs to the 68, minus of course the maple cap and the vintage frets (I recently tried one, not sure how I feel about the jumbo frets), but it does have that big headstock, plus a 22nd fret (which isn't super necessary for me), and the Texas Special pups, which sound pretty nice to my ears.

I have played an MIM 70's Strat and that was a pretty great guitar as well.

Despite all of this, I'm still pretty drawn to this 72 Strat, though it did dwindle a little upon seeing the '68 model. Thoughts?

My suggestion is the U-box site- I can't see anything about not shipping to the USA but they won't ship anything under ¥50,000.

You can keep an eye on it, I have seen 68's pop up from time to time. Speaking from experience, Ishibashi are great to deal with.

Actually sent an inquiry for a used black one, I like the black because it reminds me of the Strat Jimi used at the Isle of Wight, which was later given to Uli Jon Roth, and the Strat Ritchie Blackmore used during the tour for "In Rock."

A 68 reissue? That could be nice. I have purchased from Ishibashi too.

The American Special (or a Highway One) does have that 1968 - 1970 vibe, but it's not a fullblown reissue (if that's important to you). It is American made though.

Yeah I really like the looks of it. I always liked the Synchronized Tremolo script underneath the 70's style logo.

How long does it usually take for Ishibashi to respond? I also inquired about a 71 Reissue Strat (which has all the build specs of the 68 but looks like the 72) but I haven't heard back about either.

Indeed it does. I'm not sure it would bother me right off the bat, but it could bother me in the future, which is why I'm leaning more towards the Japan models. The American Specials do look and sound cool though, and they have the added benefit of being readily available, so I don't have to buy one sight unseen, though I've heard that's not a huge issue when it comes to Japanese Fenders
